Tales of Phantasia represents the first game in the now legendary Tales series which saw birth on the Super Famicom. NCS remembers those days well with TOP being the first ever 48-megabit game on the SFC. The Gameboy Advance reissue of Phantasia is the second conversion of the original game, with the Playstation release preceding it by a few years.

| There isn't a whole lot to say, the game is a remake of the classic on the SNES, so that's an automatic plus. I don't remember all about the SNES version actually so I can't give a complete comparison but anyway.
There's a couple new added in NPCs regarding the Elves storyline, and hence how you upgrade Chester's bow.
Added in are more levels to the Morlia Gallery pits.. there's 9 new levels to the damn thing and another final summon at the bottom. Also a new ultimate weapon for Suzu.
They've tweaked a lot of the dialogue and scenes so it's more entertaining.
And all the sprites are updated obviously so it's a lot brighter and more colourful on the whole.
Again, I don't recall if you could do this in the previous version, but you can tweak the formations and AI control more smoothly now, and you can control any one of your characters much like in Tales of Symphonia.
And since someone asked me this, no, it's all single player, there isn't a multitap option to have your friends play your party allies.
--Final Score--
Graphics: 10/10
-colourful, cute, crystal clear, and completely enjoyable.
Music: 9/10
-Motoi Sakuraba makes the some of most awesome scores I have ever heard in videogames. The only reason I give it a 9 is that for some reason the music really screws up in the Morlia Gallery and sounds out of tune, maybe there's some programming error...
Gameplay: 9/10
-the Linear Motion Battle System Namco's had in all its Tales of games is quite enjoyable for me, a perfect blend of button mashing happiness and RPG tactical elements. I could never fully figure out the party alignment thing they included in the GBA version you can play around with the L button, but it didn't really matter since I beat the game without it.
Replay Value: 8/10
-it's an RPG, you won't be playing it over and over again. but there is however a hard mode you can unlock after you beat it, and also a mini game called "Let's Go Arche!" also unlocked after you beat it which is rather humorous.
Overall: 9/10
-good solid RPG for the GBA. Better than Fire Emblem or Golden Sun as far as I'm concerned, but I may be a bit biased for this series... GO NAMCO! |
