«©NCSX» Rocket onto dusty battlefields inside a sporty Gundam RX-78-2 and swing a laser blade to blow Zaku soldiers off their feet. Couple the sword slashes with gunfire to mix up the action and you're a veritable one man army capable of tackling entire legions. In our test play this morning, we noticed that the Zaku armies are fairly subdued and generally stood around waiting for death. Koei's W-Force had improved the AI of their recent Sengoku Musou games where warriors collectively charged in for the kill but in Gundam Musou, the mech enemies hang around at the periphery without offering much resistance. One or two enemy mechs might swing and shoot but the entire gang should all engage at once like a rabid pack of wolves. There were many times where our Gundam could have been shot or slashed but we plowed through the Zaku troops without much adversity. Perhaps later levels will prove to be more of a challenge. That said, the feeling of Gundam movement and booster flight is satisfying. There's a solid resistance to the Gundam as it moves around the battlefield

NCS Game Notes
» When mechs are destroyed, a counter on the lower-right corner of the screen keeps track. When you reach 100 kills, a big "100" splashes across the center of the screen.

» Two blades may be wielded by Gundam for a whirling dervish attack where it spins and impacts damage on every mech circling it.

» Communication flashes pop up on the lower-left corner of the screen from time to time to update battlefield conditions or objectives.

» The game moves fast for thrilling skirmishes.

» Pilots and Gundams have levels and a points system which allow them to level up. A "NEXT" indicator tells the player the points required for the next level-up.

» Before each mission begins, an overhead map of the area is shown and objectives are laid out. You may inspect the terrain and plan your attack at this point.

» Game Modes:
Official Mode
Original Mode
Versus Mode [Musou Match, Normal Match or Shotdown Match]
Gallery [Character Gallery, Mobile Suit Gallery, Word Gallery, Player Record]

In the Versus Mode - Musou Match splits the screen in vertical halves where 2 players destroy as many mechs as possible before going head-to-head against each other. Normal Match is a standard VS match.

» Mechs featured in the game include the default RX-78-2 Gundam, MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam, MSZ-010 ZZ Gundam, RX-178 Gundam Mk-II, MS-06S Zaku II Commander Type, AMX-004 Qubeley, MSN-100 Hyaku Shiki, MS-14S Gelgoog, PMX-003 The O, Gundam G GF-13-017NJ II, XXXG-00W0 Wing Gundam Zero, WD-M01 Turn A Gundam, Master Gundam GF13-001NH II, and the OZ-13MS Gundam Epyon.

» When an enemy Zaku is destroyed, it'll fall back and hit the ground with a visible thud before exploding into a puff of black smoke following by nothingness. No parts litter the field after destruction.

» Missions take place on the ground as well as in space. A cool feature would have been a laser ricocheting feature where Gundam gets a gun upgrade that shoots and ricochets between many adjacent Zakus on the battlefield since they're thick as thieves out there. Alas, there's nothing like that. Instead, Gundam follows the conventions found in Sengoku Musou where the Gundam hacks away like a Warring States general. The dash move and laser rifle are new but we wanted some innovation.

» The best part of the game is zooming right into the thick of a Zaku battle group and then dismantling it piece by piece, bot by bot, slash by slash. We just wanted more resistance and activity from the enemies but we're still early in the game and haven't had a chance to check out the later levels yet given the limited time we have available to play test when new games arrive.
