In Secret of Evangelion Portable, players take on the role of a NERV operative named Kyoya who wears shades at all times. Early in the game, it's established that Kyoya is an old school chum of both Misato and Ritsuku and the two women are comfortable with him. Misato expresses some reservations about Kyoya's assignment but brushes it off. Throughout the adventure, Kyoya will come into contact with Shinji, Rei, and Asuka and his goal is to raise their level of trust in him so that information about the inner workings of NERV can be gleaned.

Exclusive features in the PSP version are as follows:
» New in-game scenes which are interspersed within the storyline

» A new Evangelion Quiz Game which offers three levels of difficulty for beginners, average EVA students, and highly obsessed devotees of the workings of NERV, the characters, and plot points. Fifty questions are collected in the database and each quiz session contains 10 randomly selected questions.

NCS Game Notes
»» The title screen features the following selections:

NEW GAME........... Begin a new adventure in Main Game or learn a bit in Tutorial
CONTINUE............ Resume a game from memory stick duo
OPTION................ Set message speed and adjust volumes for SE, BGM, and VOICE
EXTRA MODE........ Three subsections: Scenario Chart, Event Graphic, and Quiz

»» The volume is pretty low in this game so we set all volume levels to MAX.

»» If you select the Tutorial Mode under the NEW GAME option, Gendou uses spoken dialogue along with highlighted text to guide you through the play mechanics of the game. He also teaches the player the different screen options that are available.

»» The Scenario Chart sub-option lists the hexagonal layout of all 36 scenarios in the adventure.

»» The Event Graphic sub-option features 21 pages of graphics taken from the game. Each page contains 9 images except for the last page which only houses 8 images for a total of 188 total scenes.

»» The Quiz game allows the choice of playing as either Asuka or Rei and features multiple choice questions. When the question appears, select the correct answer by highlighting one of the three answer selections and press the "O" button. You are allowed 5 seconds to answer each question. There's one question which asks you to choose the correct spelling for the word, "Children" and another which asks you to select the correct spelling for "Second Impact." There's a math question in there as well. The rest of the questions are entirely in Japanese. Every time you answer correctly, Asuka will smile. If you botch the answers, she'll look remorseful. Rei on the other hand doesn't change her expression if you answer correctly or incorrectly.

»» The game is broken up into chapters and the year is 2015 when Sachiel attacks and Shinji is sent to face it in the EVA-01. After defeating it, the game proper begins inside NERV headquarters where Gendou Ikari, Ryoji Kagi, and Deputy Commander Kozo Fuyutsuki are talking and plotting. The scene changes to one of a Stealth-shaped airship flying underneath a full moon. Inside, a guy with sunglasses named Kyoya is looking inside a suitcase. After the introduction, a red splash screen with the End of Evangelion logo appears followed by the main game screen. Text which reads "Chapter: 01" appears on the upper left and next to it is "Check Route: Gundlegend." Below it is a collection of hexagon grids that are connected to each other. Below that is three gauges for "00 Rei," "01 Shinji," and "02 Asuka." To access the system menu, press the START button and you'll be presented with options to save your progress to memory card (19 slots available), restore a game from memory card, adjust game settings, and exit from the game.

»» The hexagons for each scenario represent individual scenes that play out one after the other. The first one plays automatically after pressing the CIRCLE button. In the scene, Gendou and Kyoya, the guy in the plane from earlier have a conversation. In the Playstation 2 version of Secret of Evangelion, Gendou spoke his dialogue but his voice has been removed in the PSP version. In the PS2 original, Kyoya didn't have spoken dialogue and that's the same in the PSP version. The only spoken dialogue in the game is a narration that occasionally plays during certain scenarios and bits of dialogue spoken during some interaction sequences. Once the first hexagon episode is finished, the main screen appears again and the hexagon that was just played is now colored green to indicate that you've already watched it and/or interacted within it. In the next sequence, Kyoya goes to see Ritsuko and again her spoken dialogue has been removed from the PSP version. After meeting with Ritsuko, Kyoya exits and calls up Porter on his mobile.

»» There's an option to exit NERV headquarters and walk the streets of Tokyo-3. If you select this option, Kyoya will run into Shinji, Tohji, and Kensuke on the street where they have a spirited conversation. After this encounter, Shinji's affinity towards Kyoya will increase by three bars. In a subsequent outside interaction sequence, Kyoya encounters the boys again but Hikari and Asuka join them and add some drama. Afterwards, Shinji's affinity towards Kyoya increases by 3 more bars and Asuka adds 3 bars to her affinity gauge.

»» Proceed to the next hexagon and Misato greets Kyoya. After their talk, Kozo Fuyutsuki calls Kyoya. In the subsequent hexagon, Kyoya goes to see Fuyutsuki but bumps into Kagi who is leaving. Afterwards, Kyoya talks to Fuyutsuki. Upon leaving the office, Kyoya calls Porter again. Instead of following the path of the hexagons directly, Kyoya can diverge from the route and visit various offices. In one of the offices, he'll be confronted by a fellow agent named Hawk who also wears shades indoors. At the end of the first scenario, Kyoya will bump into a NERV engineer named Hitomi who has a doctorate in Biology. She's working on the Evangelion program and is part of the group that developed the dummy plug system. After the first scenario, you'll be able to save your progress to memory stick.

»» To review the script at any time, press the R2 trigger and flip back to the beginning or any point that has passed already.

»» The approximate timeline that the game takes place in the Evangelion television series is between episode 17 and episode 24.

»» There are 10 different endings that can be routed out by playing the game in different ways and making various decisions to diverge from any previously worn pathway.
