Update: April 11, 2007
«©NCSX» Seven years after the events in Gyakuten Saiban 3, Ryuichi Naruhodo aka Phoenix Wright is no longer an ace attorney. Gone are the natty suits, the clean shaven face, and the booming courtroom dramatics. Ryuichi now sports stubble, wears ski bum clothes, and works as a pianist at a Russian restaurant called "Borscht". The new lawyer in Gyakuten Saiban 4 is an up 'n coming 22-year old named Housuke Odoroki and his first case in the game is defending Ryuichi against the charge of murder. Odoroki's mentor is a blonde bespectacled attorney named Garyuu Kirihito and his assistant is a top-hat-wearing magician named Minuki.

The previous Gyakuten Saiban game on the NDS was based on the Gameboy original but GS4 was tailored for the NDS and uses the touch screen for fingerprinting and evidence handling. The NDS mic is also used to add to the interactivity. As the courtroom dramatics take hold, Odoroki uses logic and fact finding skills to ferret out the truth and find justice for all...

NCS Game Notes & Spoilers
» Gyakuten Saiban 4 is playable only in Japanese. There is no English language option in the game.

» In the cut-scene introduction to the game, an artist is painting and blows out a candle. A swinging light is seen from a bird's eye view and two players may be seen below playing cards. The room is sketchy and darkly lit for a somber and gritty atmosphere.. When it's time to show their hands, one player beats the other with three kings and two aces vs three sevens and two aces. In a fit of anger someone smashes one of the players with a bottle and a splash of blood jets onto the wall. In the next scene, a limp and slightly curled hand drops with some cards. A phone call goes out and someone suddenly needs a lawyer...

» The next scene opens up at District Court and a lawyer named Kirihito Garyuu appears opposite Odoroki and reassures him and offers a reminder that the client is a friend of his.

» The first case is titled "Turnabout Trump" where Odoroki defends Ryuichi Naruhodo (aka Phoenix Wright) against an accusation of murder. The deceased is a traveler named Kagerou Urafushi who was killed with a bottle of grape juice during a card game. As the case unfolds, we learn that although Ryuichi's official position at the restaurant is a pianist, he's really a professional poker player who has never lost a game in the seven years he's been employed at Borscht. We also learn that the restaurant is a nexus of underworld figures and shadowy individuals.

» Although Odoroki is the defense attorney, he gets pointers from Ryuichi while he's on the stand along with nudges and help from his mentor Garyuu who sits in on the case. Forgive Odoroki's inexperience since "Turnabout Trump" is his first assignment and he's still green.

» The top screen shakes and wobbles virtually as characters interact inside and outside of the courtroom.

» When we first see Ryuichi, he's wearing a hoodie and both hands are tucked inside his pockets. On his head is a blue woolen cap etched with the word "PaPa" on the side and a "smiley" button with a big-mouth is pinned to the front of the cap.

» Ryuichi faced a murder accusation in the first ever Gyakuten Saiban game for the Gameboy so he's a two time murder suspect.

» The white-bearded and bald-headed judge from earlier Gyakuten games returns to reprise his role. Auchi Takefumi aka Winston Payne returns as the prosecutor in the first case. A blonde and lanky lawyer named Kyouya Garyuu is the main prosecutor in later cases. Note Kyouya's last name is Garyuu and he's the younger brother of Kirihito.

» The photograph of the death scene shows Kagerou Urafushi seated on a chair that's pushed close up to the table. His head hangs backwards and both arms drop straight downwards. A bottle may be seen lying diagonally on the table while chips and playing cards are still arranged neatly near the corpse.

» When Odoroki looks sheepish or defeated, he looks a lot like a sheepish or defeated Ryuichi when he was still an attorney. Odoroki is just as nervous as Ryuichi was when he was first starting out so their initial unease comes with the territory.

» Although Odoroki is inexperienced, he's a fast learner and has the help of a special bracelet which serves out the Minuku System. By using the bracelet, Odoroki can spot nervous behavior and tics which give away a person's lack of veracity. Think of it as a portable lie detector.

» When Ryuichi is giving his testimony, Odoroki can break in at any time to clarify some information or to look for further details. Tap the left-bar on the top of the touch screen and Odoroki will yell out "Hold it!" or "Objection!" in Japanese. A total of five junctures are available in Ryuichi's first testimony clip where Odoroki can break in and ferret out more information. To present evidence, tap on the right-bar on the top of the touch screen and select the item to throw into the mix. If you throw in evidence that has nothing to do with Ryuichi's testimony at the time of the interjection, your life bar will lose 1/5 of its vitality. Miss five times and Odoroki's out of there.

» Pieces of evidence may be inspected closely in a virtual chamber while in court. For example, in the first case, the bottle used in the murder may be rotated on its X/Y axis and if you need a closer look, zoom in on the bottle to check for details or clues.
