©NCSX▪ Sonic the Hedgehog is colored bright blue and generally has a sunny disposition. His polar opposite is Shadow, a darker hedgehog with street credentials who has no qualms about packing heat. Bazooka style, hell raising heat. In Sega's expansion of the Sonic franchise, players guide the anti-heroic Shadow and hit both enemies as well as members of law enforcement in an adventure where he attempts to recover lost memories. The price for the memories is Seven Chaos Emeralds that Sonic has to recover for a disembodied voice that haunts him from the immediate outset of the game. As Shadow travels the landscape, the voice offers instructions as well as admonishments...

NCS Game Notes
* The intro to the game shows Shadow loading up a submachine gun and then riding on a hog towards a rampaging beast on the street. He crashes the bike into the creature and leaps upwards, with submachine gun in hand. He then fires away at the beast and blurs in and out while police shoot at him and the monster. In outer space, a satellite opens up and readies a beam and more images flash. Yes, it's a convoluted and disjointed intro...

* In the Story Mode, the intro begins with Shadow standing in the outskirts of a metropolis as he contemplates. He has amnesia and thinks of the name Shadow the Hedgehog and has a recollection of a girl named Maria who may have been shot while being pursued by uniformed guards. As he stands there, monsters descends from a red sky and wreak havoc on the city. As he is about to turn away, a voice beckons him and commands him to find Seven Chaos Emeralds and bring them to him. Explosions rock the ground around Shadow and he decides to get the Chaos Emeralds to find out his past and what exactly has happened to him.

* The first stage is in Westopolis and begins with Shadow rocketing upwards towards the top of a building before gravity takes hold and he starts plunging downwards. Soon, he's at ground level and is joined by Sonic and the two hedgehogs team up to destroy the invading creatures and pick up rings. Sonic offers advice on playing the game and a Chaos Emerald may be picked up close to where Shadow first lands.

* Shadow has two targets: the creatures that are causing all manner of havoc and the uniformed guards who are roaming the streets. To attack, press the X button to loft Shadow up in the air and then press X again to dive at a target and destroy it. As Shadow zooms across the level, colorful ? icons may be visited to pick up tips and glean objectives.

* Shadow may fire his gun by pressing the SQUARE button. Firearms may be upgraded by destroying creatures and appropriating their weaponry. Shadow will eventually be able to use a laser pistol that's almost as big as he is and another laser blaster that's shaped like a horseshoe magnet.

* As Shadow ventures further in the levels, the coarse and eerie voice from the beginning of the game will guide him to new objectives and also scold him when he destroys the dark creatures that are terrorizing the city. He tells Shadow that since the dark creatures have the same coloring as he does, they're somehow related.
