READ: YOU CANNOT USE A FAMICOM TO NES CONVERTER WITH THE GAME THEORY ADMIRAL TO PLAY USA NES GAMES. Please read that again if necessary/confused/required/etc...

Update August 13, 2003
With unfavorable memories of the Game Axe lingering, NCS unpacked our first Game Theory Admiral to give it a test run this morning.

The contents of the package consist of the GTA, an AV cord for connection to a TV and a near useless manual. Thankfully, there is no setup involved and once the AA batteries (not included) are inserted, you're ready to go. NCS plugged in a dusty Famicom Mario Bros game and watched as the screen lit up and the familiar tinny 8-bit sounds filled the room. Screen clarity was better than what we had seen on the GAXE with Theory's bright back-lit TFT and the video from the television connection is stable...and perfect. No criss-cross interference, annoying lines or other artifacts show up on the telly screen, which we were rather pleased with. The cartridge adapter and connection also proved stable with no intermittent glitching as we found in the Game Axe where slight movements would cause the connection to go bad.

There are two joypad ports on the GTA but there are no Famicom controllers in existence which fit the ports. Please wait until we have more information from Mystery on future availability of GTA specific joypads. A contrast dial is located on the upper-right side of the unit but we found the factory setting fine and a volume dial is positioned on the top-left of the GTA.

The Game Theory Admiral only plays Japanese Famicom cartridges. Manufacturer Mystery promises a future adapter which will allow the use of USA NES cartridges but please wait for further news.

Please view the snapshot linked below for the proper way to insert the cartridge adapter that is included with the GTA. The front label of a Famicom cartridge should face you when inserted into the cartridge adapter.

Final Observation: We blew up one GTA this morning when we tried a Radio Shack AC multi-adapter (set at 4.5V and center-core negative) on it so we STRONGLY recommend using only batteries until Mystery releases an "official" power adapter for the unit.

Update August 14, 2003
NCS was able to repair the "blown up" GTA by replacing a fuse in the unit but we maintain our recommendation that customers only use batteries with the GTA until an official adapter is available or until we find one that works.

Update August 17, 2003
We're running our two GTAs at the moment and they're still functioning fine. There is no word from Mystery on an on official NES cartridge converter for the GTA but we'll keep this space updated once we have news. After hearing from a couple of customers who tried playing USA NES cartridges by using a standard Honeybee Famicom to NES converter (and failing, of course), you may notice the boldfaced notation on the top of the Theory's product description.

Jim (1): Goonies!
I have a Goonies cartridge that doesn't run on my Game Theory either. When I turn it on, I get a black screen and when I jiggle the cartridge, I see some garbage letters. Why did you get two of them anyway? Its a good game but not that good to have two. I may have a pirated cartridge tho because on my cartridge, there are no Nintendo licensed lettering and the label looks really cheesy. There is ugly artwok that doesn't even say Goonies on it. I am able to play the cartridge on my Famicom clone machine that I got from a company in Taiwan tho. Goonies is a good game even though the only attacks are kicking, bombs and the slingshot attack. The Cindy Lauper song is good too - like a SID song from the Commodore 64.
Simon Gerde (2): Chiming in
I have played Goonies and Goonies 2 on my GTA but I have one of those 128-in-1 cartridges from Hong Kong. Too bad there are really only about 12 games since the games are all repeated about 10 times. For Goonies 2, the actual name is Goonies 2 Fratelli Saigo no Chousen but there's like 12 names like this with small differences. Do I feel cheated? No since it is a neat cartridge to have anyway, but its kind of lame to call it a 128-in-1 cartridge when it should be a 12-in-1. Just putting in some feedback to the guy who couldn't get Goonies working.
Chris (1): Totally useless to me
I only have 3 Famicom games, but I bought it primarily to play one single cartridge that I searched high and low for years - The Goonies. Well, it's the ONE game that this thing doesn't seem to play - glitches out and freezes past the title screen (my other cartridges are fine, and I've tried two different copies of The Goonies with the same results on both carts). If anybody can tell me how to get this ONE CARTRIDGE working, email me - savasca@vcu.edu
