The fourth chapter (No, Metal Slug X was a remix and does not count in our numbering scheme) of the long-lived Metal Slug series chugs onto the Neo Geo scene on June 12, 2002. Update Sept. 17, 2003 What we learned today: 1) The labels of USA Metal Slug 4 cartridges all have a little bump on them. 2) Japanese Metal Slug 4 cartridges don't have this bump. 3) Our price of US$295 for the Metal Slug 4 cart was too high. Becauase we learned (3) today, pricing for Metal Slug 4 has been lowered to meet the market... Yes, NCS learns something every day.

| People seem mighty reluctant to badmouth the Metal Slug series. I can't say I blame them much, as the first 3 (or 4, if count both versions of MS2) installments in the series were easily some of the best games to come down the pipe in the shooter genre, and some would argue *the* best.
Here's my issues with the most recent version:
Gone are the creative level layouts of MS3, and in their place are filler variations that try to mask the fact that you're really just mowing down line after line after line of the same enemies, all of whom are rehases of previous MS characters, or out-and-out copies of them. Even the new characters you can play as are simply head-swapped versions of the characters they're meant to replace, and it's pretty sloppily done at that.
Nadia isn't wearing a hat, but Fio's hat will occasionally fly off her head when she dies anyway.
This isn't to say MS4 is a bad game, because it isn't. It does seem to scream "hack job", however, and only the fact that it derives from an excellent game saves it from being a poor game in and of itself. The "new" stuff (mostly just the ability to use two guns at once) looses it's sheen after the first stage, and there are enough seams and holes to make this seem more like a decent fan-made mod job than an honest-to-God sequel that you're going to shell out $300-odd bucks for.
A little more time and a lot more polish could have gone into this one, but as it stands right now, it pales significantly when placed next to it's predecessors. If you've got to get it, make sure it's either the first one you play, or you already have the other 3. |

| Wondering if the game is well worth your hard earned money? Well this is a very sujective question as any game that costs over 200$ better be damn good. But for a Neo Geo game, and I suspect you already own one if you're reading this, this is one of the best games your money can buy. Now is it the best of the series? No. It's nowhere as fresh and innovative as the third installment. What you'll first notice is the rehash of a lot of ideas from the 3 first games. Despite these little flaws, it's still one of the best 2d side scrollers that has ever graced the earth. Grab yours while you still can and Never leave home without them! err though they might be a bit heavy for that. |
