Update: October 25, 2007
«©NCSX» Summer vacation is about to start and the protagonist of FFTA2 named Russo is rarin' to go. Just as he's leaving the classroom, his teacher stops him and punishes him for a previous infraction by sending him to the library. Russo wanders into the book-filled room but notices that the librarian isn't there. He decides to sit down at a table and flips open a tome. The pages are blank so he flips quickly through the pages in an effort to find something. As he twiddles through the pages, the objects in the room start to orbit around him and a strange dimensional slip occurs. Soon afterwards, Russo drops into a new world where he's greeted by a big monster and three soon-to-be comrades led by a warrior named Cid...

NCS Game Notes
» At the outset of the game, players may enter their name in English, Katakana, or Hiragana. Although the Nintendo DS generally uses a stylus, the name entry screen only recognizes the d-pad and buttons to tap out the letters. Following that, the game itself only uses the d-pad and buttons throughout the adventure. There's no stylus input at all. The game asks three multiple choice questions and the first scene opens up inside a classroom. It's almost summer vacation time and the students are notably anxious to get out of school. If you haven't changed the main character's name, he's known as Russo, a brown-haired lad who's stopped by the teacher just as he's about to exit the room with two of his friends.

» In the next scene, Russo enters a library without a librarian at the front desk. Russo looks around for a few seconds before he plops himself on a chair and opens a tome. He flips through the pages slowly at first but accelerates into a furious pace when objects from the room start spinning around him and Russo subsequently finds himself falling through black space with the now glowing tome dropping behind him. Fade out.

» Birds are chirping and three wanderers walk into view on a lush isometric patch of land. Before them in the distance squawks a massive chicken-like monster which flaps its wing-like appendages to and fro. The three are on a mission to corral it when Russo blinks into view in front of the monster. The three are taken aback momentarily. The monster squawks once more and Russo's attention is suddenly focused on the beast behind him. Russo quickly joins the party of three and the leader of the gang summons a suit of armor for Russo to wear. In his new incarnation, Russo wears a floppy red hat and a stylish outfit which distinguishes him from the other three warriors who is led by a blonde-haired guy with a pointy nose named Cid. Two smaller versions of the chicken-like monsters scuttle in from the southeast. After a short conversation between Russo and Cid, a battle begins where the party of four battles the big mama monster and two smaller versions of the big 'un. The big monster has 278 HP while the smaller creatures are at 77 HP.

» The players takes control of three members of the party but Cid is controlled by the COM. Movement is handled like Final Fantasy Tactics where players move and then attack or use an item. The action menu is simplified however into only three main options as follows:

MOVE - Press the "A" button and the range of movement is highlighted
ACTION - Choose to Attack, Use Magic, or Use Item
END TURN - Quit the action phase and then choose an orientation

» After moving the woman warrior with the big ears, she turns to Russo and explains a few things. After each turn, you can choose the orientation of each character so that they'll face a monster to defend against back stabbing. For the first mission, you don't have to defeat any of the creatures. The aim is to wound the big chicken-monster enough so that it flies off. Once it has vamoosed, you'll win the battle and bonuses are awarded. If any member is defeated during battle, never fear since they'll be still around after the battle. The important thing is to make sure that one member survives in each skirmish so that the whole party can return upon successful execution of each mission.

» After the battle, the four are standing around talking when Russo's stomach grumbles something fierce. Cid chuckles a bit and the party goes off to a tavern in search of vittles.

» At the tavern, Russo will form a new clan and procure missions from the head of the guild. The next mission takes place to the southwest of the tavern on the travel map where the gang takes on three creatures. Sid tags along on the outing and Russo's party has expanded to a total of six members. After the mission, Russo's tome (or grimoire) gets a bit of writing on one page as his travels are chronicled.

» New areas open up on the world map as missions are completed.

» Cid accompanies Russo and fights on his side for the first couple of missions but takes his leave when Russo enters the first new area to the northwest. He'll drop by from time to time to offer support.
