Update: March 14, 2007
«©NCSX» Namco's Mojipittan releases have sold over 500,000 copies in various forms over the past few years. The game finally reaches the stylus tapping mechanics of the Nintendo DS with a jam-packed and fun-filled upgrade. The main game mode features over 400 different Japanese language puzzles and a versus mode pits two players against each other wirelessly. In our travels within the software this morning, we also checked out a map feature. The first map is of the Middle East with Iraq in the center and colored aqua-blue and Iran is to the right in bright red. Studying the maps will come in handy when playing the Quiz Mode of the game.

Mojipittan is a Japanese word creation puzzle game where a 100,000 word dictionary tracks legal and proper words. Three game modes are available to keep wordsmiths busy and thinking.

NCS Game Notes
» The first stage in the normal game is designed to look like one of the yellow Mojipittan creatures on the cover of the game. Other stages that may be found include one that looks like a bird, a human, and one that may be interpreted as a clown of some sort.

» When playing the game, the words or phrases that you create are shown on the top screen immediately along with a definition. After a puzzle is completed, you may opt to look at all of the words that you created which are shown on a tabulated list.

» Before each puzzle, a girl in the background yells out, "Ready... Go!"

» In the standard puzzle game mode, a selection of Japanese character on tiles are piled up on the left side of the screen. Select one and place it on an appropriate space on the gameboard to create words and phrases. If your positioning is accepted, the tile is bolted onto the board and a swirl of activity occurs. If your word creation attempt is rejected, an "X" appears along with an unfriendly buzzer. When a puzzle is completed, the boxy golden colored creatures from the game cover bound around in a festival of celebratory madness.

» Although Japanese language comprehension skills are recommended in order to fully enjoy Mojipittan, players may also complete the puzzles by trial and error and perhaps even learn a little Japanese along the way. Mojipittan is also a fun and useful teaching tool for students who are learning Japanese.

» Playboards are designed to look like creatures, geometric shapes, and objects. When you create a word construction of at least two characters, they'll bolt together and blink while a crisp sound plays. The minimum word or phrase construction is 2 character tiles but larger assemblages may be created and you'll be rewarded for the lengthy construction as well as each segment inside that creates a proper word or phrase.

» Two players may enjoy a limited "download" version of the Mojipittan game if only one player has a game card. If both players have Mojipittan, a full-fledged versus mode is available where all game modes may be played.
