Update: May 16, 2007 «©NCSX» When citizens are in need of a helping hand and yodel for assistance, the Ouendan boys are never too far away. The dashing cheer captain Ryuta Ippongi and the team from the original Ouendan return to the rhythm fold along with another cheer quintet led by Hayato Saionji. Whereas Ryuta and company wear black trench coat uniforms with red armbands, Hayato's squad is decked out in prim blue uniforms with white trim. As is the case in the original Ouendan game, the boys help hapless folk by performing well in syncopated rhythm exercises which require deft stylus tapping and sliding. The soundtrack contains 19 new songs compared to 15 songs in the original Ouendan. Songs include "Bang! Bang! Vacance" by SMAP, "Boy's Heart" from Fujii Fumiya, and "Pop Star" by Ken Hirai. The gist of the game is to tap on numbered cues in sequence as they appear on the touch screen. A colored circular outline closes in on the cue and the time to tap is when the concentric outline hits the perimeter of the numbered cue. Keep tapping the cues as they are activated and the Ouendan cheers will be beautiful. As the tapping action takes place, the top screen shows an episodic event concerning the character in need of help as he navigates through his situation and scenario. The tap action is accompanied by animations of the cheer team performing like champs as they punch the air, step around, lean askew, and pose. In addition to the tapping action, sliding motions, and quick revolutions of the stylus are also required of the Ouendan gamer. When sliding, a short chute is shown with a starting point and a goal. Tap on the numbered cue at one end of the chute and drag it to the other end when prompted to register a hit. The spinning action is performed when a disc appears on the screen and you're charged with swishing the stylus in a rapid circular motion to whirl it round and round. When spinning, a green concentric circle outline zooms in on the disc and you have the time/chance to score mega points. Citizens in need of help include an ambitious salaryman who was the student Tsuyoshi Hanada from the original Ouendan, a shoe salesman who travels into space on a shuttle to sell his wares to aliens, and a sumo wrestler who can't compete. NCS Game Notes » A training session starts immediately after you tap on the title screen to begin the game. The basics of game play are demonstrated where you're shown the way to play and then you perform. If you miss a cue, the boys will be blown backwards as if punched by a giant's fist. » In the normal game, the first scenario posited is one where a blue-suited salaryman is yelling "Help" in the middle of the street. Literally. Watch as he waddles back and forth with both arms in the air and acting frantic. Tap on him to trigger the help scenario where the cues are simple to navigate and conquer. If you perform well, he'll do good in business and eventually make it to New York City and eat a corndog in front of the Statue of Liberty. After the mission, you're graded on your performance and assigned a letter grade. A graph of your accuracy is also presented which shows the quality of your cue hits. » In the next scene, the original Ouendan crew are standing on a wharf when a rival group of Ouendan rush up on a boat helmed by Hayato Saionji. The scene shifts back to the city again and you may tap and drag on the map to move it around in search of people screaming for "HELP" » If you move north of the salaryman, you'll find a red-haired sumo in need of help. He can't even beat a scrawny older gentleman in the ring so he screams out for the Ouendan to give him a helping hand. The sumo's rhythm mission features the slider cues in addition to tapping for a tricky mix of action. If you do well, he'll be knocking opponents out of the ring like a champ with a single shove. If you do poorly with the cues, the sumo will be getting knocked out. » Eastward of the sumo is a female student who needs some assistance. In her exercise, the new team led by Hayato Saionji makes their appearance and they posture and pose beautifully in the background as you master the cues. » Go south of the student and a white-suited doctor cries for aid since he's being mobbed and choked aboard a ship for his services. If you perform well, he'll help mend a horse, repair a microwave, and accomplish other tasks. » After finishing the doctor's mission, the two Ouendan groups finally meet and there's electricity in the air as they move on to the next level where more people are in need of help around the city. » After completing each help mission, the assisted person stays on the map and holds up a colored flag that's red if saved by Ryuta's crew or blue if saved by Hayato's group. » Some songs in the game include: Song / Artist Kibun Joujou - mihimaru GT Shounen Heart - Home Made Family Bang! Bang! Vacance - SMAP I Believe - Ayaka Rirura Riruha - Kimura Kaela Okuru Kotoba - Flow Zenryoku Shonen - Sukima-Switch Oh, My Julia - Checkers Go My Way - Yaida Hitomi POP STAR - Hirai Ken VISTA - Going Under Ground » Ouendan 2 is highly enjoyable rhythm game which maintains the high energy and wacky scenarios of the original Ouendan. The first four scenarios are fairly simple and seasoned Ouendan players should be able to conquer them with near perfect scores. However, the difficulty level ramps up in the next four exercises and your stylus will be dancing over the screen to keep up with the rapid fire cues that appear around the touch screen. We're very pleased with Ouendan 2 this morning and it is little wonder that this game has pre-sold exceptionally well. This document is ©NCSX 2007. All rights reserved.
