«©NCSX» Yoshimori Sumimura hails from a long line of sorcerers entrusted with the protection of a mysterious power that was once held within a feudal lord. When the lord was killed five centuries ago, his remnants and attendant power were interred at a location known as Karasumori. Since that time, the Hazama family has protected the site from invading monsters known as Ayakashi who would excavate and use that buried power for their own nefarious ends.

As the story begins, Yoshimori Sumimura is the 22nd Kekkaishi who's been charged with protecting the site. Along with his pet demon dog Madarao and his friend Tokine Yukimura, Yoshimori stops the Ayakashi forces at Karasumori Academy from taking over a great power.

NCS Game Notes
» The intro to the game sets up the storyline and background information for Kekkaishi with a quaint woodcut-like illustration and a depiction of Yoshimori and Tokine in action with Madarao, the family demon dog.

» The game opens up with an isometric view of Karasumori Academy. Tap on the touch screen to advance the dialog. When night falls, Yoshimori's grandpa, Shigemori Sumimura appears and gives Yoshimori Sumimura an exercise to complete where he must capture and confine 10 ayakashi.

» The game switches to a side scrolling platform level where Yoshimori is controlled entirely through the d-pad and stylus. To jump, push up on the D-pad. Your pet dog Madarao floats near you during this level and offers emotional support. To capture an ayakashi, simply tap on it and it'll be encased in a blue barrier cube. Tap on the red icon on the right side of the touch screen and the creature is blinked away and into your storage area. Continue walking and tapping and you'll eventually gather 10 ayakashi and the level is completed.

» You can throw out only two blue barrier cubes at any one time the outset of the game but as Yoshimora levels up, he can throw out more to take care of bosses and stronger henchmen.

» On the second night, gramps send you on a similar mission where 10 more ayakashi creatures must be captured and confined. The third night features another similar mission with 14 ayakashi to capture. The fourth night introduces a new enemy but it's still the same routine. On the fifth night, you'll learn how to use power orbs on screen where you can cube it and then tap on the red icon to capture multiple enemies that may be hovering around the power orb. For example, if there are four creatures near a power orb when you encase the orb, triggering the red icon will whisk all four creatures away into captivity. There's also a few opportunities on this level to capture 2 creatures with a single cube and whisk them away.

» The sixth night starts out with any other night but the orientation now scrolls from right to left instead of the default left to right aspect. There are some regenerating enemies on this level but other than that, it's another night of routine work.

» The seventh night is fairly exciting and plays like a level of Galaga. Enemies stream into the screen from the top and from the sides and you must destroy them all or as much as you can by encasing them and then triggering smacks. The trick is to capture multiple enemies such as the wafting jellyfish with a single cube to wipe them from the screen. The side entry annelids require two hits on the head to defeat them but there's one point in the first annelid wave where you can capture two worms at the same time twice in a row and then destroy them.

» On the eighth night, it's Madarao who gives the orders instead of gramps. This level features shelled crustacean-like creatures that aren't fazed by conventional barrier cubes. What you have to do to stop them is tap and then hold on the touch screen to create a larger cube that encases them. The first tap 'n drag cube will hit them and the second one that you create will destroy them. You also have 3 cubes on the eighth level instead of 2 henceforth that you can use to capture ayakashi.

» As you go deeper into the game, the objectives are generally the same but the levels are expansive and require exploration in order to locate and capture all of the ayakashi within. For example, on the ninth level, you'll have to go all the way to the left side of the second floor and go outside and capture all the ayakashi in the wild. You'll also have to use barrier cubes to jump higher and higher until you reach the landing where you can capture a bunch of meandering ayakashi.

» Bandage icons can be picked up to recover health.

» During the daytime, you can speak to different people by tapping on their icons that appear on the touch screen. Through these interaction sequences, you'll learn about rumors, background information, and other helpful info.
