Update: July 30, 2007
«©NCSX» Neku Sakuraba is a typical teenager who's been given the gift of mighty psychic power. Soon after receiving his new ability, the thoughts of his fellow denizens in Shibuya, Tokyo come rushing in. The next broadcast hails from the Shinigami Organization which informs him that he's been inducted into a suicide mission of sorts known as the "Game of Death." Neku has seven days to fulfill their demands or he'll be killed. To this end, Neku runs through the streets of Shibuya and destroys creatures known as "Noise" in a bid to save himself. Along his travels, he runs into a girl named Shiki who wears a belly shirt and an oversized hat. Along with Shiki, three additional cohorts named Beat, Rhyme, and Joshua also provide support and advice to help Neku along his way. Ample training missions at the outset of the game ensure that Neku's ready for the adventure ahead.

NCS Game Notes
» In the intro to the game, a view of Shibuya 109 is shown along with other storefronts in Shibuya. Main character Neku is shown amidst crowds and by himself as he holds a soliloquy. The Square Enix logo appears followed by the game title and the crowds of Shibuya and the famous crosswalk. In the next scene, Neku is shown sprawled on the floor but he gets up and realizes he can hear the thoughts of people around him. A skull disc has been planted onto his right palm.

» Neku stands in the middle of the Shibuya Crosswalk where throngs of pedestrians are walking to and fro. Once control is handed over to the player, you can move Neku via the D-pad or by pushing the face buttons in the direction you wish to move. For example, A moves right, B moves down, and Y moves left. If you prefer the stylus, tap on any point on the touch screen and Neku will dutifully run over to the tapped location.

» Tap on the skull icon on the lower-right corner of the touch screen to trigger the next event where Neku is informed that he has 7 days to fulfill his mission or he'll be killed. A timer also appears on his palm which counts down the time. Next, three frogs with strange bottoms appear and attack Neku right on the street. The crowds are gone and the tutorial primer commences.

» To run, tap on Neku and then swish the stylus in a direction to run in that direction. The three frogs will jump right on Neku and then attack by climbing onto his head and then jump off with a mighty kick. Neku can't counterattack in this sequence since the goal here is to teach the movement methodology. To exit, press the START button and click on the "Escape" button.

» Neku's back on the street with the crowds when an animated sequence plays which shows the supporting cast and Neku running. The creative staff credits roll for about half a minute before the game resumes.

» Another sequence plays where Noise frogs grab a few citizens and snatch them off the street. Things take a more serious tone.

» The next training mission demonstrates Neku's first attack. To trigger it, wait for the power-up gauge on the upper-left corner to fill up and then tap the stylus on the touch screen to unleash waves of fire. There a couple of frogs hopping around so burn them up and be congratulated with the "Noise Erased" graffiti.

» Neku bumps into Shiki and they get acquainted. Another training mission gives both Neku and Shiki and chance to attack. Subarashiki is a unique concept in that both NDS screens are used to display separate action sequences. On the top screen, Shiki hangs on to her stuffed animal and does her thing when you push the d-pad "RIGHT, RIGHT, RIGHT, RIGHT," "DOWN, LEFT," or "UP, LEFT" to trigger attacks. There are three attacks at the outset. While Shiki is attacking on top, Neku attacks Noise on the touch screen by way of stylus control.

» The next part of the game takes place at Shibuya Station where the background sound of trains rolling upon tracks may be heard. To start three new training sessions, tap on the skull disc on the lower-right corner of the touch screen. The new missions are as follows:

1) Slash attack v1.0 / draw a line from top to bottom on the touch screen and Neku slashes out an attack.
2) Slash attack v2.0 / Slash at a tipped-over signpost to send it hurtling at enemy Noise to damage them
3) Lightning attack / First tap on a frog to plant a cursor over it. Next, tap within the cursor to send a bolt of lightning down on it. Blue fireballs may also be shot during this training mission by simply tapping at any point in front of Neku. Tap multiple times quickly and a rush of fireballs will be shot.

» After the spate of training, Neku and Shiki meet Beat and Rhyme who are hanging near the entrance to Shibuya Station. After asking them five questions and receiving their thoughtful answers, make sure to equip Shiki with two technique discs so that he can attack upcoming Noise. To equip the discs, press START to access the TOP MENU and then tap on the image of the discs on the right side of the screen. You may also save your progress by tapping on the icon below it.

» Neku will speak to two more people and then you can tap on the SKULL icon on the lower-right corner to check out where the NOISE are hiding. Thus begins the first proper battles in the game where Neku and Shiki perform their attacks on the touch screen and the top screen respectively. Note that you can ignore Shiki if you want and she'll go into "Auto-Play" mode where she combats the Noise on her own volition. You can then concentrate on keeping Neku alive against the rampaging frogs.

» Many more special attacks may be used by finding special discs that impart the attacks to Neku.

» When traveling around Shibuya, both Neku and Shiki appear on the touch screen and they move in concert by way of the d-pad, stylus or face buttons. To converse with other characters on the touch screen, walk up to them and tap.

» The dialogue in the game is not voiced by actors but Neku and Shiki do make vocal exclamations to express surprise or angst.

» Neku uses his psychic scanning abilities to read the thoughts of the people around him to gather clues.
