Description
Update: November 2, 2009
«©NCSX» Nintendo's celebrating the ninth anniversary of Sin and Punishment (N64) with a sequel on the Wii. The original S&P was a Nintendo 64 game developed by Treasure which was an on-rails shooting action game where the protagonists did their shooting while running on land and flying through the air. The sequel takes place in a dystopian future where Earth has been wrecked and devastated so the heroes have to plan their escape from the ruined planet.

Sin and Punishment 2 hews to the same type of game as the original where players control a heroine named Kachi or a hero known as Isa. The heroes flit around the foreground and shoot at installations, enemies, and objects in the background and the mid-ground. When an enemy wanders into the foreground, Kachi or Isa can swing a sword to destroy it. The Nunchuk is used to maneuver the hero around while the Wii Remote controls a targeting reticule that spots enemies for destruction. Two projectile attacks are available - a steady stream of unlimited bullets which are activated by pressing and holding the "B" button and a powerful laser blast that takes time to charge and is activated by pressing the "A" button.

NCS Game Notes
» Please note the Sin & Punishment game disc forces a firmware update to 4.1J. You will not be able to play the game without agreeing to the update and installing it.

» The title screen is relatively stark by today's standards. The golden game logo is plastered center stage against a bluish icy background. Thin towers may be seen in the distance whilst the camera slowly revolves.

» Press the "A" button and choose a save-file from four possible choices. You can also proceed into the game without selecting a save-file. You'll be prompted to enter your name, such as "NCSXSHOP" and go into the stark main menu which contains the following choices:

1P START - Play a one-player game in EASY, NORMAL or HARD difficulty modes
2P START - Play a two-player game in EASY, NORMAL or HARD difficulty modes
OPTIONS - Choose controller (Wii/Nunchuk, Classic Controller, Gamecube Pad, or Stinger), Adjust Screen, Adjust Sound
RANKING - View Best Records or download online Ranking Records via Wi-Fi

» A lizard serves as the pointer icon.

» Players can choose a green-haired lad named Isa who's metrosexual enough to wear thigh-high boots or a girl named Kachi who wears a sensible skirt, jacket, and knee-high boots.

» At the outset of the game, Isa and Kachi are aboard their spaceship when it's hit by something. The impact is accompanied by a loud and jarring thud. The ships loses altitude and crashes down onto the icy planet below and comes to a shop near a ravine. Kachi rouses Isa from his slumber and the two assess the damage. The ship isn't a complete loss but it's been damaged and intruders have come aboard. In their control room, the Isa and Kachi decide to fight back and control is handed over to the player.

» The Nunchuk and Remote are used in conjunction to maneuver Isa or Kachi around. We chose Isa in our test game. The exit to the control room is blocked by debris so you'll have to press and hold the "A" button to charge up Isa's raygun and blast away the blockage. Further ahead, two intruders attack in a lackadaisical manner so blast them away too. In the next area, Isa gets up close to a blocked entryway but his raygun won't do the trick here. Press the "B" button to slash the obstacle away followed by some more slashing to rid the world of spherical enemies that have seemingly settled down in the corridor like a gang. In the next room, humanoid intruders have gathered and will start shooting. This is where we learned that enemy shots can be slashed away into nothingness. To spray shots at the enemies, press and hold the "B" button to unleash rapid shots. Fire a few blasts at the enemies and they'll be dispersed.

» Similar to the original Sin & Punishment, the sequel is on rails. This should've been apparent early in the game but it's reinforced when Isa has to dodge energy obstacles (in his own ship, no less) by moving to the left, moving to the right, positioning his body between them, and so on and so forth. When you get up to the stationary turrets which fire sheets of lasers, you'll have to get acquainted with the "Z" button on the Nunchuk since that's how you'll perform a barrel roll to evade lasers, shots, and other oncoming fire.

» The first level boss is a spidery mechanical monster who stomps its spindly legs in a downward motion to do damage. Other than that annoyance, it's a fairly straightforward target. Concentrate your fire on its hull and watch out for the bouncing explosives that it launches out along with the occasional sheet of laser fire.

» After defeating the first boss, Isa and Kachi are unceremoniously ejected from their own ship and they're shown falling into a crevice.

» In the next scene, the two wake up in an underground city of some sort. Kachi has been impaled but she recovers and leaps off of the spike that spiked her without much wincing. The two are greeted by an ominous being who laughs in an evil way and seems too smug for his own good. He throws an energy lasso at Kachi and captures her but she blinks out of the tether. Isa and Kachi escape and run to the next area. While the two are running, the next stage starts and control is handed over once again where Isa has to shoot down enemies in pursuit. There's a breathtaking aerial sequence in this stage that's a stunner. We think you'll recognize it when you see it.

Region Lock-out
Please note Japanese Wii games will not boot on USA or European Wii consoles due to the inherent region-lockout on Japanese Wii game discs. A Freeloader (and a Wii with 3.2U firmware) is required to play Japanese Wii games.
