Description
Update: July 31, 2009
«©NCSX» Wander into the wilderness once more and hunt down monsters great and small. Your job as a Hunter isn't to record their feeding or breeding habits in a little journal. No, your job is to slay them all. By using weapons that are well-suited for all out war, the Hunter slashes, stabs, slices, and dices his way through legions of hapless creatures. Victims include docile monsters who are easy-going plant eaters that wouldn't hurt a fly as well as rampaging creatures who are hunters in their own right.

At the outset of the game, players create a custom Monster Hunter by adjusting a number of variables such as clothing color, hair style, and eye color. Every Hunter starts the game with a run of the mill sword and shield but players may out him/her with better weapons during the course of the game. Along with everyday monster butchering, Hunters also get to tackle missions which invariably involve monster hunting. Different weapons featured in the game include swords, gun-bows, axes, hammers, and more.

In addition to killing all manner of monsters on land, players will also get to dive underwater and slay monsters in the murky depths where serpentine creatures dwell. The Wii Nunchuk and Remote controls are well suited for monster hunting where all of the functions including camera adjustment are within reach of the player's fingers on both hands.

NCS Game Notes
» The intro opens up with the camera underwater and peering upwards when a large reptilian swims across the water followed by a pair of the same reptilians. Those two are then followed by a whole crowd which circle the waters and attack one of their own members. The camera rises above the ocean to a view of rampaging monsters who are being chased by smaller predators. It's a chaotic sequence where survival of the fittest is shown for the viewers edification. In a particularly endearing scene, a winged predator flies off into the sky with the carcass of its prey held firmly in its talons. It flies over a group of adventurers who watch it fly off in the distance before the Monster Hunter 3-tri logo drops into view.

» Press "A" and then "A" again on the Remote to bring up the save file screen where you may choose a save slot from 6 available positions. Afterwards, you'll be able to start a "NEW GAME," "CONTINUE," or view the OPTIONS. After selecting the NEW GAME option, the character creation screen comes into view where a custom-built hunter is crafted from a default male or female model. The following qualities may be tweaked and adjusted: Sex, Skin Color, Clothing Style, Clothing Color, Face, Eye Color, Facial Hair or Markings, Hair Style, and Hair Color.

» We created a blue-haired male warrior dressed in athletic clothing. We made sure the color of his clothing matched his hair. Each character is given a shield and sword at the outset but the weapons may be exchanged for more powerful versions later.

» Once the character is created, he's immediately aboard a ship that's cleaving through the oceans. The camera switches to a view of a village where life is going along normally with scenes of fishing, barter, a man carrying huge soup bones, a man carrying a dead shark, and other heart warming scenes of village life. A lady chops the head off of a fish in one sequence. The ground shakes and the villagers get a little scared. They gather to commiserate on what might have happened and the game hands control over to the player soon afterwards.

» Monster Hunter 3-Tri is played with both the Nunchuk and Remote. The analog stick on the Nunchuk controls the movement of the hero. When moving, press and hold the "Z" button to quicken the hero's pace. To talk to a villager, move towards him until a red arrow appears above his head and press the "A" button. When roaming the world, the camera may be panned around by pushing left or right on the D-pad located on the Remote. To perform a kick, press the "-" button and unsheathing the hero's sword is accomplished by pressing the "+" button. Once the weapon is out, it may be used to slash monsters by pressing the "A" button or by swinging the Remote in sweeping motions. Sharpening your sword is accomplished by pressing and holding the "C" button and then pressing "A" on the remote. Pressing "1" will also sharpen your sword. Once pushed, the hero will sit down and sharpen the sword on the edge of his shield.

» When roaming the world, a map on the right side of the screen keeps track of your location. You're designated by the red arrow which twists and turns as your hero runs through forests, meadows, and the occasional tundra-like environment. The first group of monsters we encountered looked like miniature versions of Stegosaurus and they appeared to be a docile family of four that just walked around aimlessly as our Hunter entered their midst. There were two adults that appeared to be the parents and two little ones that were probably the offspring. Grunts could be heard emanating from them as they walked around and we decided to leave them alone (for now). Hacking up a family of monsters didn't seem like the right thing to do on a Friday morning.

» To creep up on beasts, press the "B" button on the Remote and the hero will crouch down and slowly shuffle towards his prey. To dodge a monster attack, press the "B" button while moving to perform a forward barrel roll. The camera may be centered at any time by pressing the "C" button on the Nunchuk. This function is useful when things get a little hairy when slaying monsters and the camera might be slightly askew due to the action on screen.
