Update: September 3, 2009 «©NCSX» Namco's Pac-Man was a video game phenomenon that inspired sequels, clones, and even a song back in the day when 8-bit was bleeding edge. Nearly 30 years later, Namco's still around albeit as a part of the Bandai empire and Pac-Man still scores high on the awareness meter. TabeMon is sort of like a spiritual successor to Pac-Man. The main character in the game looks like a mutated version of Pac-Man and it eats. A lot. He's named Pepper and has a partner in crime named Sugar who looks like something from the Pokemon Universe. Instead of being isolated within a maze and chased by a quartet of spooks in Pac-Man, TabeMon features free-roaming gameplay where the hero runs around chomping down mobile as well as immobile objects and creatures on screen. Players may alternate between Pepper and Sugar during the course of game play to mix up the visuals. At the outset of the game, Pepper is a low-level beast that can't devour higher-level alien fruit-creatures known as Tabemon. However, by eating and growing in stature, Pepper gains levels and gets to chomp on his betters. Pepper also has a dash move where he charges into Tabemon to bust them up into smaller versions so he can eat them up. In addition to Tabemon minions, massive bosses also provide adversity in the game. NCS Game Notes » In the first few seconds of the game's cinematic introduction, a golden pyramid may be seen in the distance. The capstone is a piece of dung also known as "unchi" in Japan which has that swirly soft-serve ice cream appearance. However it's not just any unchi. It's precious and sacred unchi.» As the introductory cinema continues to roll, UFOs are razing the kingdom and stealing precious unchi through ray beams that lift them into their ships. However, the denizens fight back with two special animals - Pepper and Sugar. At the outset of the game, players may choose from an orange beast with blue eyes and a spiky green tail named Pepper or a pink puff of a creature that looks like a dog with a tail but without appendages known as Sugar. » The game starts off with a few training exercises to teach gamers the mechanics of Tabemon. Players will make use of both the Nunchuk and Wii Remote. The analog stick on the Nunchuk maneuvers Pepper around the stages and popping the Remote upwards in a quick motion makes Pepper jump onto tree stumps. Pressing the "A" button causes Pepper to open its maw and chomp on targets. The "Z" button targets an object on screen and puts a white reticule over it for directional chomping. To perform a dash attack to destroy targers, press the "B" button and Pepper will zoom into something with force and gravitas. » After the training exercises, the proper game starts with a view of a village where a few houses are ablaze. Move from left to right and chomp the onion-like creatures that pepper the fields. Cross a river and a UFO lands and releases a few more onion-like creatures along with some new aliens that look like walking eggplants. Pepper levels up by eating certain items and he'll need to reach a certain level before higher-level obstacles, objects, or creatures can be consumed. However a higher-level creature such as the walking mushrooms can be dashed into in order to break them apart into smaller mushroom creatures which can be consumed. When they're eaten, Pepper levels up and grows in size and stature. » There's a Level-25 bottle blocking a cave entrance in the first level but Pepper will be at level 12 or 13 when he reaches it so he'll have to do some more leveling up before he can break the bottle and enter the cave. In this sense, there's backtracking in the game where insurmountable obstacles in the level must be revisited to bypass them. In the first stage, you'll also have to backtrack and consume a UFO to end the stage and head on to the second level. » A graphical representation of Pepper's stomach appears on the upper left corner of the screen. As creatures are eaten, they'll appear in the stomach » Acorns can be collected in the various stage for bonus points. Some are hidden and others are in plain view. The first stage contains 10 acorns. » A vacuum-contraption power-up may be utilized to suction up creatures into Pepper. » After each stage, Pepper shoots out marbles from his posterior which are indicative of the creatures he's consumed and a letter grade is assigned to rank your performance. » The second stage introduces cannons which launch Pepper into new areas to explore and consume creatures. » When Pepper reaches a certain size, lower-level creatures will run from him. » The end-level boss in the second stage is a mammoth green vegetable of some sort. Pepper will have to run into it with zoom-zoom power to bust it up and then attack the smaller creatures again to break them up into lower-level creatures that he can consume. After the second stage is conquered, a tree-like boss is met who must be broken down and consumed by way of crashing into it, eating, and crashing some more. This document is ©NCSX 2009.
