«©NCSX» When describing a "Simple" series release from D3 Publisher, it's helpful to narrow the overall theme of the game to five words or less. The brevity is to get the point across quickly. In the case of The Shooting Action, our five words would be, "Poor Man's Senko no Ronde."

Similar to G.Rev's earlier action-packed effort, Dokodemo Asoberu is a one-vs-one shooting game which takes place in cramped quarters. The analog controller on the Nunchuk is used for movement while the Wii Remote is the weapon of choice. Fire by pressing the "A" button and aim that firepower by waving the Wii Remote around so that the blue onscreen cursor targets the general direction of your opponent. A dash move is activated by pressing the "C" button on the Nunchuk to speed away from ordnance.

Three game modes are playable including a Time Attack and a Nonstop Mode but it's all one-on-one shooting hysterics. Later levels add wrinkles to the game play including independent gunners that shoot indiscriminately, bumpers that knock a ship away, and black holes that suck ships into their centers and hold them immobile for a spell. Along with the earlier Simple Wii games, Dokodemo Asoberu marks the fourth release in a row that's playable, fun, and somewhat addictive.

NCS Game Notes
» The nunchuk analog controller is used to move and the "A" button on the Wii Remote shoots. The direction of fire is controlled by waving the Wii Remote which moves a blue targeting cursor around. To fire off a spinning round of special-attack firepower, press the "B" button. The "C" button pressed in conjunction with a direction move on the nunchuk thrusts in that direction for a short burst of dash.

» At the outset of the game, you'll be able to choose from four ship "frames" which encircle your character like an inner tube except they're made of metal and are empowered with heavy artillery. The yellow frame fires off missiles while the red ship shoots a single laser pellet that explodes and acts like video napalm. The blue frame fires lasers that are more rapid. The purple frame shoots off a thick and slow laser that packs a wallop but it's... slow.

» A 1-vs-1 game option pits two players against each other in an enclosed 1-screen stage where you thrust around and fire away at each other. There are rocky obstacles to provide cover but after they take a few hits, they'll disintegrate. The game is broken up into stages where challengers come in one at a time. Power-up capsules may be destroyed to release the bonuses inside for shields, health, or other enhancements. Stage 1 consists of 4 battles - conquer them and you're off to Stage 2-1 where new enemies with powered-up versions of the four frames await. Bumpers are also introduced in Stage 2 which "bump" your ship away if it comes into contact with it.

» The third stage introduces an independent gunner which sits on the lower left corner of the screen and fires shots into the screen to indiscriminately hit any ship thats in its line of fire. Stage 4-1 introduces a swirling black hole in the center of the screen which sucks ships in and holds them temporarily, making them cannon fodder.

» Stage 5 starts with a new kind of bumper which reflects shots. The opponents in the levels aren't tough until you reach level 5-4 where the opponent can fire off a tracking laser which stays on your ship and can potentially eliminate 90% of your HP with one shot. That's where the thrust move works well to dash out of harm's way. The enemy in level 6-1 can shoot a laser which passes through rock. When you die, your frame explodes and your Mii is shown floating in space as his lifeless body slowly revolves. Macabre. We got up to 6-2 and our score was 424350.

» The second game mode is the standard move which is also broken up into stages and players battle nonstop against one-on-one enemy battles. Our frame of choice is the red frame since it fires video napalm - the greatest weapon ever created in gaming. We first noticed napalm in Capcom's Forgotten Worlds and were drawn to its magical qualities. A napalm shot hits its target and lingers which causes additional damage. This is also the case in The Shooting Action. At first, the napalm shot is measly and doesn't do much damage but stay with it because it gets stronger and the blast radius widens as your ship powers up. For example, if you get a direct hit on an enemy, you'll do about 9 hits worth of damage as opposed to 1 hit with a normal laser. Shoot off a volley of napalm shots to trap an enemy in the multiple blast radius and a 20+ hit damage stint is possible. Due to the power of napalm, its the weapon to use if your goal is mass damage and quick kills.

» The third game mode is a Time Attack where both ships have 180 or 300 seconds to destroy each other.
