«©NCSX» The boys of summer won't let winter deter their fighting spirit when the ninth Power Pro Kun Pocket ships to market today. Mixing standard big-head baseball action with a new Story Mode (three episodes), one of which features a brown-cloaked hero/mentor and five highly entertaining mini-games, PPKP9 includes a little bit of something for everyone. We do mean everyone because there's even an automatic baseball simulation mode which plays the game for players who don't even like playing baseball. Just sit back and watch each game blow by in brisk, fast-forward fashion. When playing the game, outfielders will automatically rush towards fly balls and infielders gravitate to line drives. » The Powerful Baseball series continues with a simulation where the voice is used to control defense along with the D-pad. There is no stylus support. » In the Story Mode of the game, a brown-cloaked hero saves a wee baseball player from a trio of thugs while Zorro-like music plays in the background. In the Story Mode, players control a rookie who trains, interacts with NPCs, eats, drinks, exercises, rests, and does his best to become a valuable part of the team. Each day transitions to the next with a small animation of the player pulling down on a rope which changes from nighttime to daytime. » When batting, pressing the B button swings while the A button bunts. » When pitching, select a pitch with the d-pad and then press the B button to throw. » We found it inordinately easy to strike opposing batters out with a mix of pitches and trailing throws. On the other hand, we were able to connect with most pitches thrown our way which may mean the game's difficulty is reduced. Or we're getting better.
