NCS Game Synopsis Update: October 23, 2003 «©NCSX» Delve deep into a dank dungeon-like tower once again with From's latest take on the popular Shadow Tower series. The action is viewed from a first person perspective and monsters may be watched as they rush towards you, scuttle about clumsily or hide in the darkness of shadows. Monsters also live their own lives and don't exist solely for your hacking pleasure. In the recesses of the Shadow Tower, monsters socialize with each other and go about their daily rounds but they won't hesitate to attack when your hide is spied. The goal of the game is to reach to top of the tower and escape from the horrors within. From Software boasts over 600 weapons, armor and items that may be used in the game, ranging from cudgels which may be used for melee style attacks to swords for slicing and slashing to heavy plated armor which slows your movement but protects your girth. When striking a beast, warriors may aim for specific body parts to disable them. For example, a sword wielding ogre won't do much against you if his arm has been butterflied. Realistic movements and weapon physics add to the dramatics of the game and impart a sense of urgency as sword shake and projectile weapons recoil. The control scheme in Shadow Tower Abyss is fairly routine and intuitive with the left DS thumbstick controlling movement and the right thumbstick taking care of attacks. Swerve the attack stick for a side slash or pound it up and down for an overhead smash. The trigger buttons may be used to bob and dodge away from oncoming blows.
