Iori, Kyo and familiar faces from previous years such as Billy Kane, Yamazaki and Yashiro return in KOF 2002 which is built around KOF 1998's mechanics. The classic 3-on-3 team battle formula remains the same and the Strikers system is gone. Exploits have been reduced and fighters are more evenly matched against each other for better balance. Team players gain power stock for Max mode which is used for actions such as Fast Emergency Escape, Guard Cancellation Body Toss Attack, Guard Cancellation Emergency Escape, Super Cancellation and other cancel/escape moves. A MAX2 Super Desperation Mode is available to fighters for last ditch barrages. The PS2 version features high resolution 640x448 video, 3-D backgrounds, and sharp graphics which look slightly better than the Dreamcast version of KOF 2002. The action is faithful to the original although the loading times still needs help. A total of 43 characters (4 hidden) are spread out over 13 teams who fight over 18 stages.
