Description
Update: May 24, 2005
«©NCSX» After an alien invasion decimates the population of the Earth, the remaining survivors marshal all of their technological know-how into six bleeding edge jetfighters capable of taking on the alien creatures. In a tribute to the Afterburner game engine, The Uchuu Daisensou features fast-paced, arcade style aerial combat where alien creatures and bosses are attacked and destroyed in quick succession. The aliens are modeled after insects and crustaceans... but on a massive scale. The pace of play is brisk through 20 missions where gamers defend Earth installations from attack, destroy enemy bases, dogfight, and intercept various alien missions. Twelve types of weapons are available including beam weapons, bombs, vulcan cannons, and streaming missiles which fly towards their targets with billowing vapor trails behind them.

As missions are completed, jets may be upgraded with better engines, more maneuverability, armor, and firepower upgrades. Once a jetfighter is powered up enough, it will be able to throw out 20-30 missiles at a time which fills the screen with a twisty dance of destruction. A barrel roll move be performed as an evasive move to avoid incoming fire.

Along with single player gaming, there's a split-screen 2-player mode where two fighters cooperate to defend the Earth.

This game is also known as The Great Space War.

The Otakami (4): A great shooter!
I've only recently started purchasing games from D3P's Simple 2000 series, and have been very impressed with them all. This is no exception. Uchuu Daisensou has great graphics, excellent controll, really cool looking fighters (yours & the enemies) and creatures, and a nice array of weaponry. The video of your battle after you beat a mission is an excellent bonus, but you almost never see your wingman in it(even if it's player 2 - which upset my friends a great deal). For some reason also, player 1 has to set up player 2's fighter before each mission. Missions can be short if you go directly for the primary target, but there are lots of them (about 24, or so). I was surprised that there was no unlockable bonus item for getting S rank on every stage & difficulty. This is still a great shooter for fans of the genre, and I highly recommend it. How can you go wrong with the price?
