Update: July 27, 2005 «©NCSX» The date: June 12, 2019 - Three months after repelling the first alien invasion as chronicled in the original Chikyuu Boueigun (Simple 2000 Vol. 31), the UFOs and massive insects are back for a surprise encore. Once again, players suit up in body armor, take up the gun(s), and fire heavy ordnance to bust up chitinous exoskeletons. The new alien attack vanguard targets London at first and eventually moves to Tokyo. In light of recent events in The City, the gaming metaphor is a tad ironic. Massive creatures including arachnids and insect invaders such as centipedes and flying ants are on the rampage and only a well armed soldier can stop their assault. Over 140 weapons are available for fending off the beasts including machine guns, rocket propelled grenades, and guided missiles. When the insects explode, they'll erupt into a dust cloud of yellowish debris but when UFOs are taken down, they'll explode into fiery conflagrations that will also destroy any insects that are nearby. Watching a bunch of ants swarm a building is fairly impressive. Destroying the building and watching it crush all of the ants that were once swarming is doubly so. Battle through 25 thrilling levels on foot but similar to the first game, vehicles such as a tank, a helicopter, and a motorcycle are also available to use as machines of war to beat back the insects. Also known as The Earth Defense Force 2. Jan Code: 4527823993174 View the back cover and screenshots on the main NCSX website.
NCS Game Notes * Despite being released under D3 Publisher's budget label, Chikyuu Boueigun 2 is one of the best run 'n gun shooters available in the market, bar none. We can safely recommend it to anyone who's into shooters as well as action games which involve fighting huge adversaries. The game is well done but we expected no less from developer Sandlot after we thoroughly enjoyed the first Chikyuu Boueigun game and their Alchemical Drive game for PS2. Our only niggle is the control which could be tightened up a bit but as it is, we're very satisfied with the overall product. * The first level will hook a gamer immediately with the barrage of big ants as they swarm around the buildings and race towards the player. In addition to a machine gun, players also have a bazooka on hand with which to blow up multiple ants at once. The excitement level builds when the ants press the attack and surround the player. For a wrinkle on playing the first level, step off the bridge and into the water and battle the ants while you're waist deep in the river. * When an ant that's racing towards you is shot and sent to an early grave, it will crumble right in front of you for an up close view of its massive ant body as it lies there dead. The sight of so many lifeless ants flipping over might make your skin crawl but their bodies disappear after a few seconds. Shooting at ants will also cause their bodies to release floods of yellowish liquid. Ants will also spit yellowish jets at the player. * As ants are killed and blown up, they'll drop health power-ups, armor, and additional weaponry to pick up. What are they doing with such useful items? The ants attack by biting with their mandibles but a quick gamer may avoid their jaws by running underneath an ant or hiding near a tank or building. * Aiming in the game is automatic. For example, ants will climb up and down buildings and your gunsight will follow the ant without any need for input from the player. This causes a slight problem when you're trying to target another ant but the action moves so fast that one can shoot the elevated ant and then turn the gun sight on a ground level ant that's about to nibble on your skull. * To enter a tank or other vehicle, stand next to it and press the "SELECT" button. You'll enter it immediately and become instantly fortified with additional weaponry and a protective shell in the case of the tank. If you ride on one of the mobile motorcycle-like craft, you can still be knocked off of it when an ant pecks it and causes it to explode. This document is ©NCSX 2005. All rights reserved. | First off...wow... This game is amazing! Ok, if youve ever heard of the old movie "Them" with the giant ants attacking the world, mix that with the cheeseyness of a Godzilla movie, and make it with the game mechanics from Body Harvest (except alot better) you get an creepy and awesome game! Chikyuu Boueigun 2, which translates to Earth Defense Force 2, takes place 3 years after EDF 1. Earth has succesfully eradicated alien invaders (which are...apparently...giant ants... and other misc. alien monstrosities like Godzilla dinosaurs) and lived peacefully, until 3 years later when teh aliens retaliate. You play as a girl in purple armor or a guy in red and white. Spanning the two characters, there are 72 levels to play, along with 5 difficulty settings (Easy, Normal, Hard, Very Hard, INFERNO). There are also 140 weapons to find and use. There are severe differences between the two characters. The guy uses conventional weapons, like assault rifles and missle launchers. The guy can also ride in vehicles, like a tank, helicopter, and hover bike. The girl on the other hand, cant ride vehicles. Instead, she uses a jetpack. This comes in VERY usefull! The girl also uses sci-fi weapons, like a burst plasma rifle and laser CANNON THAT DOES SO MUCH DAMAGE ITS SICK! The cool/creepy aspect of this game is that there are these giant ants crawling over everything, people running away, and explosions and everything! Not to mention a completely destructable enviroment, (which leads me to a lesson of the day.... never shoot a laser cannon in the middle of a town square...thats a good way to get alot of innocent people, and yourself, killed in about 2 seconds...) This game is really awesome, but there are some problems here and there. For one thing, the game will lag sometimes. Its not that bad, but enough to kinda make ya go...ehhhhh. Its forgivable though, considering how much is going on. The other thing is when you go to pick your weapons... its in very japanese...so you may end up picking weapons you dont want. One time, all I had were 2 grenades... which is no good. Im sure Ill get it eventually. All in all, import this if you can.
Good
AWESOME RUN n GUN action! Not to mention 2 player co-op!
Bad
Some lagg, Lots of japanese, and that announcer doenst SHUT THE HELL UP!!!
Ditto
All the sound effects and "sci-fi" weapons sound like the cheesey lazers from Godzilla, and the whole game resembles a bad Japanese horror movie. Its great fun!

| I'm totally blown away by how much fun this is. You just run around and blow stuff up. Each of player characters plays differently and certain missions are easier to pull off if you learn each character's strengths.
There is a minimal language barrier, mostly with regard to the weapons. With a little bit of time the menus and weapons are easily navigable. Mission objectives are not a problem as the only objective is to pretty much destroy anything that shows up as a red blip on the radar.
The bad bits are minimal but annoying. First the game has some big framerate issues. Though with a few dozen ants, spiders or saucers on screen at once I can let that go. What's more problematic is the fact that you cannot manually aim/look. Vertical camera control is automatic so if you're trying to shoot at one of the massive saucers high in the sky and a spider runs by you'll target the spider. Also, a good percentage of the weapons auto aim. So despite the fact you've got that huge saucer dead center in your sights, your missiles will make a 180 immediately after launch and fly towards the absolute closest enemy.
Don't let the few bad bits get you down. The game is fantastic. Buy it while you can. |
