Update: September 11, 2008
«©NCSX» Sega has already released Fantasy Zone under the Sega Ages (Vol. 3) banner. That was 5 years ago when the Sega Ages series was still young in the tooth and its footing was unsteady. Thirty volumes later, Sega has marked Vol. 33 as Fantasy Zone Complete Collection which compiles six Fantasy Zone games and "gaidens" as follows:

» Fantasy Zone
» Fantasy Zone II Opa Opa no Namida (Original and Remake)
» Fantasy Zone Gear Opa Opa Jr no Bouken
» Super Fantasy Zone
» Opa-Opa: Fantasy Zone In the Maze
» Galactic Protector

Most of the Fantasy Zone titles include a Gallery section which include bonus artwork and scans of the original game manuals. A few games such as the System E version of Fantasy Zone II and the System 16 version of Fantasy Zone also include Super Play footage. Similar to all other Sega Ages 2500 games, a one-page leaflet is included which features historical data and details on the game.

NCS Game Notes
» Press "START" and a TITLE SELECT box pops up with two selections as follows:

1) Fantasy Zone II (System 16 Remake)
2) Classic Games (Fantasy Zone, Fantasy Zone II, Fantasy Zone Gear, Super Fantasy Zone, Opa Opa, and Galactic Protector)

» The Fantasy Zone II remake is a coin-op port and is properly titled, "The Tears of Opa Opa. Similar to the original Fantasy Zone, it's a side scrolling shooter but the Opa-Opa ship can move back and forth at will. In that respect, the game plays like Defender or Stargate.

» If you press the "SELECT" button on the title screen for Fantasy Zone II, the System Menu will appear which offers the following selections:

» The Super Play "footage" for the System E version of Fantasy Zone II lasts 15 minutes and 46 seconds. The video shows a skilled player going through the entire game from beginning to end without losing a single Opa-Opa.

» For the games that have storylines, the text is entirely in English.

» The Opa Opa: Fantasy Zone in the Maze is a Pac-Man variant where dots are gathered on a maze while enemies roam around. Strangely, we found this game to be the most addictive this morning but it might be because we've never spent much time on this particular game and we've played the others quite a bit before today.

» Only the D-pad on the Dual Shock 2 is used for movement. The "X" button fires a shot and the "O" button drops a bomb.

» NCS has checked out all the versions of the Fantasy Zone games and we've listed the menu options for every variant below. If you count the different coin-op versions of the System 16 version of Fantasy Zone, Sega's Complete Collection contains a total of 14 Fantasy Zone games and conversions.

** Galactic Protector is the only game which uses the Dual Shock analog stick. Back in the day, the game was played with a special knob controller which is similar to the Arkanoid controller. The game is played like a reverse version of Atari's Tempest. The Opa-Opa is moved around the outer perimeter of a planet while invaders approach from all sides. Opa's job is to shoot the invaders and ensure that they don't reach the planet's surface. If too many invaders reach planetside, it explodes and Opa is flung into the far reaches of the cosmos.
