Standing in the middle of a train platform and staring intently at a swimsuit model in "Young Jump" magazine, Kei Kurono might be forgiven for his dismissive attitude towards people and life in general... Kei Kurono is headed home from school when he watches a hapless drunk fall onto the railroad tracks. When Kei's childhood friend Kato Masaru jumps onto the tracks to help, Kei reluctantly joins in. For their act of charity, both are killed (decapitated, no less) by an oncoming train. Or are they? Kei and Kato find themselves in a room with six other supposed dead folk, a dog, and a black spherical object situated in the middle of the location. Panting furiously after their attempt to escape the train, the group gets acquainted and then are all sent onto a gruesome battle against a hulking humanoid creature. Soon, the boys are recruited into a war against aliens that only they can see. Run around darkened town streets and cut, shoot, and blow up aliens who explode into splatters of green gore accompanied by death shrieks. A special effect that one will encounter from time to time is where a body explosion leaves splatter chunks on the camera lens which slowly fade away after a brutal killing. The action is viewed from behind the hero and the camera dutifully flows along with speed and efficiency. To immobilize foes, a Y-Gun may be used which shoots out a special rope which wraps around an alien and then anchors it down. Once tethered, the alien will remain immobilized for a few seconds which leaves it helpless against an attack. Normal attacks with weapons are the norm but cars and other objects may be picked up and hurled at enemies as well. Weapons include X-Guns, X-Rifles for long range attacks and the Gantz Sword for slashing close. Mines may also be planted to destroy oncoming rushers and other items include an invisibility device and a trap which is like the Y-Gun except it is planted on the ground and activated once someone trods over it. | Nemmo (9): FANS WILL LOVE! |
 |
| First off, let me say this. If buy this game (thats IF you can find it somewhere, Good Luck!) be prepared to print out a translation guide for it! Luckily, GameFAQs.com has an amazing one with very few typos. Gantz is a game Ive been looking forward to for a while now, because I fell in love with the show. The game is great, but I was surprised at how the game actually plays. GANTz is a Text Based/Choose Your own Adventure/Hack n Slash game. What does that mean? Well basically, the game will have the characters talking to one another (Occasionally Kurono thinks to himself) and you will get a choice in how to respond to certain circumstances. If youve ever played a dating sim, its kinda like that. Depending on what you pick, your relationship with certain characters will go up or down, or your Hero or Leader skill will go up. This is important, because when the game ends, depending on your final score (And how many characters you got killed, if characters die, EVEN MAIN CHARACTERS, they will NOT come back for the rest of the game) you will get one of 16 different endings! Decisions dont just count for that though. If you choose to do certain things (usually when you have to decide to go somewhere to search for something, but it happens in action too) Youll find a...subjectional magazine.... Which you collect throughout the game. For every three of these fine magazines, you unlock some... fan service... As you can guess, Im trying to get them all! Characters will also lose health if you choose something bad. After some of these talking sequences (be prepared for alot of them, theres more of these than there is action gameplay!) youll be brought to a screen to choose 2 weapons, the X Gun, the X Rifle, the Y Gun, and the GANTz Katana. Then youll be brought to a screen to choose 2 accessories, the Suit Upgrade, Invisibility remote, the GANTz Laser, and the Capture Mine. After that (more talking may ensue) and then your brought to a character select screen. The characters you pick here will NOT be who you play as, but merely your two computer controlled characters that will obey your commands (You can tell them to attack, run away, or defend) The funniest part of picking a character is that you can pick Rice...the Butter Dog... Dont ask why his name is Butter Dog, but he IS a dog... and thus does absolutely nothing. Then youll be sent to the Action/Hack n Slash part of the game. This usually involves you killing HORDES of enemies. Cool scenarios can happen midway through, like sometimes an arrow will appear somewhere on the map, and if you press L1 on them, youll do something. For instance, I stood next to a car and that arrow showed up, so I pressed it, my character powered up and picked up the car, you then aim it and throw the car at the enemy (there is TEAM damage by the way). Depending on how many aliens you kill, youll get points. Ways to get extra points are by using the Y Gun or OVERKILLING. Then some more talking happens midway through, usually every mission has 3 hack n slash aspects to it. Youll then have to fight a boss... whos hard... VERY hard! They pull things you dont see coming! Then youll get your scores (and depending what you do, you can get certain titles that GANTz calls you to make fun of you) and more talking will take place. All in all, the game has ALOT of japanese dialogue, so if you cant read Japanese and havent seen the show, you may not like it as much as I did. The guide on GameFAQs.com only covers what the decisions are, which if your a fan, is enough to get you by. Fans of teh show will not be disapointed!
Good
The game is VERY interesting, the fighting is extremley fun, and with 16 different endings and over 1000 ways to change the flow of the game entirely (dont quote me on that!) it has replay value!
Bad
If you cant read japanese and havent seen the show, you may not like it as much. Also the music is very lame!
Ditto
I like the fan service...alot...
