Update: May 22, 2003 «©NCSX» A classic vertical shooter undergoes the re-release treatment on Playstation. Similar to many other shooters, the ship in Soukyugurentai fires a vulcan shot and unloads a screen clearing bomb attack. Unlike most other shooters however, a grid of sorts may be projected onto the screen from the ship which maps out targets for destruction. One of our recommended shooters from the Saturn and Playstation days when both consoles were in their fighting prime. As the first level begins, players rush into a glittering twilight city scene where cloud whiz by and enemy ships begin to appear from behind, from the sides, and above. Project your targeting web and mark groups of fighters with a sharp tinkling sound and a glowing scope. Once marked, firing lasers will home in on the ship and destroy them. In the first part of the game, one may get through the entire level by using the targeting web and nary a vulcan shot. The first boss appears to be a mechanical construct of some sort which quickly shoots out four thick lasers from its appendages. Once you destroy those arms, it shoots out a pair of wings and begins to fire out copious amounts of buckshot. The strategy at this point would be to stay in the center of the screen as most of the boss' shots are wasted on the sides of the screen. Once the boss is defeated, you'll move onto level two which takes place above the earth and your ship exits from a large space station and onto the battlefield of space.
