«©NCSX» Vertical shooting games were once a dime a dozen but as 3-D engines propagated a mass of fighting games and adventures, shooters saw relegation to the backburner. Some publishers however kept the flame going and Cave's Do Don Pachi enjoys its third incarnation on a PS2 port. Shadowed in your flight by a mass of flitting enemy ships and a frenzy of scattershot which only the sharpest of players may evade, you travel through the varied levels with unblinking eye and dextrous fingers. The game system is markedly unfair but massive firepower upgrades for your ship even things out somewhat. An announcer barks out various sayings in English through the game such as "Watch out, Watch out!" when a boss arrives or "Power Up" when you grab a floating "P" icon. Nice graphical touches in the game include the shadow effects where everything airborne leaves a shadow on the ground and realistic billowing explosions. A bonus DVD is included in each copy of DDP which features video captures of experts shooting and maneuvering through the levels of the game. When watching these videos, one wishes the wizards would mess up at least once or twice to see if they make the same mistakes you made but no.
