Description
«©NCSX» The original R-Type game from 1987 broke new shooter ground by adding a versatile Force Unit which served as shield as well as weapon upgrade. Bolt the Force Unit onto the fore or aft of your R-Type ship and it would automatically serve as a barrier against oncoming fire as well as blast out lasers, reflecting shots and other offensive power. R-Type has undergone a number of upgrades and updates through the years and Irem unleashes the last ever R-Type game on PS2.

Irem touts 99 types of ships to use which are unlocked as the player progresses through the level. Colors (body and canopy) may be customized and weapon choices (missile types, bombs and Force Units) are picked before the level begins. The battle in R-Type Final starts on Earth and eventually takes the player through the solar system to the heart of the Bydo Empire.

An R's Museum section allows the viewing of every R-Type ship in the game, their capabilities and weapon systems which is a nice little touch to close out the R-Type franchise and bid adieu to staunch fans.

Pat Jacobs (15): WOW!
This game is SICK! I'm a diehard R-Type lover ever since the late 80s when I played the original at the arcade in Penn Station. There was an arcade down at the mezzanine level where the passengers waited for LIRR trains and I used to always go in there while waiting for my train. I would play R-Type, Forgotten Worlds, Samurai Shodown and Prehistoric Isle since they were my favorites. Those were the days and bring back great memories but Irem really made this new R-Type game great. Its fast and the graphics in the later levels are breathtaking. I have every R-Type game released for the different game machines including the PC-Engine version of the R-Type Collection and this is a great addition to my shrine. I'm still trying to find that dogtag that was given away with the game in Japanese shops though.
shinmew (2): Is this R-Type standards?
If you like R-Type Delta and want a game like it, this is for you. You have a lot of ships to choose from. This includes old ships from old R-types. It looks very nice. The music is not quite as good as Delta, but it is still nice. You have a Delta attack on this game as well (super bomb). One of it faults is to older R-Type Gamers. They game is more easy then the others. I feel it lacks in replay value as well, unlike part 3 and Delta. Overall, it is still a great game.
