«©NCSX» Four mighty guardians preside over the gates of hell and watch it intently to ensure the seal is never broken. When one of the guardians named Kagami tires of protecting the peace, he endeavors to open the gate and wield the power within for himself. That won't do. The other guardians pursue him and a host of warriors are drawn into the fray to stop the gates of hell from being thrown ajar.

Kaede, Yuki, and Moriya return to the gaming fold in a collection which contains the two Last Blade games which were originally released on the Neo Geo. The conversion quality is admirable for the PS2 but one can't expect a 1:1 Neo Geo port. The source code ran on a few hundred megabits of direct access ROM while the PS2 spools data into the system by way of DVD. Concessions have to be made (see NCS Game Notes below).

Along with the solid action and responsive controls, a special online mode allows gamers to challenge fellow fighters connected to the internet. For newbies, Last Blade is a 2D fighting game where samurai and fighters engage in one-on-one sword clanging action.

NCS Game Notes
* Online gamers may link up through the Multi Matching BB service.

* Before the title screen, a futuristic SNK Playmore introduction starts by counting up the years that the company has been in existence and leads to a retrospective of the company's games which flow into the screen in gold-gilded windows.

* The game select screen features three hexagons on top which hold the options of Last Blade, Online Mode, and Last Blade 2. Five hexagons line the bottom of the screen and represent options for Load/Save Data, Joypad Button Configuration, Adjust Screen, Adjust Audio, and Customize Characters.

* As mentioned earlier, the conversion quality is admirable but given the limitations of the PS2 hardware, frames of animation have been dropped and the audio sounds a tad hollow when compared against the rich and throbbing audio of the Neo Geo original. The PS2 conversions of both games however run fast and fluid with responsive controls. Control of the fighter may be performed through the D-pad or the L-Analog and both methods are suitable. We found the L-Analog surprisingly comfortable and accurate.

* The shadows of the fighters in Last Blade 1 shimmer something fierce. They're somewhat muted in Last Blade 2.

* The blood is red and flowing.

* Neo Geo lovers will enjoy the original Neo Geo intros before each game where the big Neo Geo logo appears accompanied by the familiar jingle. The "Max 330 Pro Gear Spec" and territory warning screens are also intact.

* Last Blade Game Modes:
Story Mode / Short Mode / VS Mode / Time Attack / Training Mode / Option

* Last Blade 2 Game Modes:
Story Mode / VS Mode / Time Attack / Training Mode / Option

* The languages supported in both games are English / Spanish / Portugese / Japanese.
