«©NCSX» When photographer Rei Kurosawa finds an image of her dead beau in a photo taken at a decrepit mansion, her interest is piqued. Jolted awake from a nightmare, a strange tattoo of a scaly serpent appears on the right side of her back. Red and fiery at first, the tatoo blackens as it spreads out. The tattoo just happens to look similar to tattoos that emblazon the arms and bodies of ghosts that reside in Rei's nightmares...

A few moments in the game appear to be inspired by the movie Ku-on (The Grudge) and accomplish their eerie effect. Rei's weapon of choice against the spirits is a new camera which is outfitted with a strobe light which may be used to temporarily freeze spirits in their tracks.

Rei moves in fluid animated fashion which is more lifelike than the stilted movements of competing horror adventures. Her features also emote fear, surprise, and pensive anticipation when the situation calls which adds to the atmospherics of the game. The ghosts materialize in various scenes with their blank, dead faces mournfully looking on as Rei takes their photographs and captures them. Two other protagonists may also be controlled in the game - Miku Hinasaki from the original Zero game and a new character named Kei Amakura who was a friend of Rei's beau and wants to find the truth about his longtime friend.

NCS Game Notes
* Rain pours down heavily in the intro to FF3. Heroine is crawling until she gets up and staggers slowly in front of an outstretched hand which is connected to Yuu. Rei is taking photos inside a dilapidated house and her assistant asks if it's time to go and grabs the camera equipment. In one photo, Rei notices Yuu standing in a doorway. She runs to it... and the scene shifts to snow. It's snowing inside a house and Rei is in front of some shrines that are gathered together. Control is handed over to the player at this point.

* The "TRIANGLE" button toggles camera view and "X" snaps a shot. When walking, press the "SQUARE" button to speed up Rei's pace. The L-analog is for movement and the R-analog moves the flashlight around. As she walks around with her flashlight, images of ghosts will appear in certain spaces that Rei can't see but the gamer can see them clearly. There's a walking man, a woman and child, and a shuddering older man. None of the ghosts attack.

* When Rei ventures up a flight of stairs, a knife wielding ghost will attack. Take a snapshot of the discarnate to contain its wrath. Rei eventually follows Yuu into a house and then undergoes another nightmare sequence where a group of girls stake her to the ground. At this point, she returns to the normal world and her assistant arrive to ask if everything's okay.

* In the next scene, Rei is in her darkroom and developing prints from the house. She develops the photo of Yuu standing in the doorway and gasps. As she sleeps later that night, she dreams of standing in fron of the house again and she slowly walks to the door. At this point, the game proper begins and Rei explores once again with a flashlight and camera. Whereas the original dream sequence was in black & white, the new sequence is entirely in color.

* Rei will eventually find the Camera Obscura. In that same room, you may save your progress by walking up to the blue lamp and pressing the "X" button.

* When a ghost is near, the DS2 will rumble intermittently.

* Rei is the spitting image of a Malaysian girl we know who lives in NYC.
