Update: June 7, 2007
«©NCSX» Novelist Sakaki Ichiro supervises an original script for Enterbrain's Magician's Academy Playstation game which is based on his books and subsequent manga of the same name. Sakaki is known for his Scrapped Princess works which originally reached market in 1999. Fitting neatly in the Moe RPG genre, the characters in Magician's Academy are a dainty lot with big eyes, pert bodies, and an irresistible essence of charm and lovability. While the cast is undeniably cute, the action is all business where the party battles opposing forces on tactical grids. The first mission pits the heroes against a group of robots who collectively pack a wallop. The movement and attack phase is similar to other S-RPG games where characters are sent scurrying across the stage to meet opponents head-on. When a hero is adjacent to an enemy, select the attack move to deal a blow or choose the magic option fire off an offensive spell. The battles run smoothly with no-nonsense execution and a sense of solidity about everything.

The game system in Magician's Academy eschews the concept of characters leveling up to ever higher gradations of power. To increase the capabilities of a hero, items may be equipped to enhance his performance on the battlefield.

Bonus Schwag
Every preorder and new order for Magician's Academy will include a set of four rolled-up posters which depict artwork of the main characters of the game. The posters are packaged inside a little box.

NCS Game Notes
» In the intro to the game, the main characters and villains are introduced in still-images interspersed with spot animation. The title screen features the characters ringed around the logo.

» Press START and the following selections appear:

NEW GAME / Start an adventure
LOAD GAME / Restore a game from memory card
OPTION / Adjust sound volumes, toggle Dual Shock vibration, etc

» Start a NEW GAME and a dialogue box appears accompanied by voice acting which sets up the storyline of the game. Afterwards, a view of a neighborhood of white houses is shown followed by a rumbling sound. A red-headed moppet appears on the left side of the screen followed by a violet-haired warrior woman who's carrying a golden sword that's nearly as tall as she is. She looks like Sion from Fate Stay Night. Their dialogue is accompanied by voice acting and they're later joined by the protagonist and a blue-haired girl. Redhead and blue-hair get into a fight that's shown by a static image that covers the entire screen.

» After a lengthy intro sequence, the game proper starts with your party of three against six robots. The action menu appears on the upper right corner of the screen and the commands are:

MOVE
ATTACK
MAGIC
TECHNIQUE
VIEW STATS

» Either the d-pad or L-Analog may be used to move the cursor around. The protagonist has a fireball magic attack at the outset of the game that deals 250 points of damage. After defeating the six robots, an interaction sequence between the party members is shown. The next battle pits the party of three against eight robots. Watch out for the robots located on the bottom of the screen because they're able to fire off beam weapons that do 150HP worth of damage per hit. The third battle throws ten robots against the party.

» Your HP is entirely replenished between rounds. The action consists of standard movement and tactical fighting sequences that are split into missions. Each mission is preceded by an interaction sequence between the three party members.

» When enemies are defeated, they sort of just blink out of existence without any special sound effects or theatrics.

» The pink-haired girl yells out "Mew" after attacking

» To fast forward through the dialogue sequences, press and hold the R-1 Trigger button.
