«©NCSX» According to Norse mythology, the Doom of the Gods pits the Aesir pantheon and allies against the Frost Giants of Jötunheim and their assembled legions. Prior to Ragnarok (aka Gotterdammerung), a few signs herald the beginning of the end.

Fimbulvetr, the mother of all winters, ignites conflicts and sets brother against brother. Earthquakes break the bonds of Fenrir and allow it to escape. The same earthquakes allow Loki to bound out of his enchanted imprisonment and Jormungand, the Midgard Serpent, approaches land while painting the sky with its poison. From the sea, the Giant Hymir sails to war on the ship Naglfar which is made from the nails of the dead while the minions of Hell also disembark for battle. Joining their Giant brethren, the Fire Giants led by Surt also head for the plain of Vigrid where the final battle awaits. With a blazing sword, Surt will set fire to the nine worlds.

With such a mighty host assembled against them, Odin knows the Aesir are doomed and that Ragnarok cannot be averted. Despite the knowledge of destiny however, Odin nevertheless calls upon a Valkyrie named Lenneth to gather together champions from Midgard to fight alongside the ranks of the Aesir as the day of doom nears. Lenneth performs her job and as new warriors are assembled and properly trained, they are sent to Asgard to bolster the forces assembling for the final battle at Vigrid.

Square recreates the Valkyrie Profile adventure which was originally released for the PS1 on the PSP with widescreen visuals and new cinema sequences that portray key scenes in the game.

NCS Game Notes
* Upon starting the game, the original PS menu screen appears with a facade of Lenneth in the upper left corner and the following options on the lower right side of the screen:

New Game
Continue
Configuration
Sound Mode
Prologue
Movie Gallery

* The Movie Gallery section contains 12 cinemas from the game that are unlocked after you view them in a normal game. The opening cinema, Lenneth's debut, and the Princess turning into a beast were all unlocked after our play-through this morning.

* At the outset of the game, a young girl named Platina fills a bucket with water and is hurrying home when she bumps into two men who are exiting her house with mama. Mother smacks her across the face and reprimands her. Later that night, Lucio appears outside Platina's window and tells her that she's been sold into slavery and encourages her to run away with him. Reluctant at first, Platina resolves to escape her destiny since life really wasn't that great at home anyway.

* Platina and Lucio reach a field of flowers. That are poisonous. Lucio tells Platina that they have to leave but she appears content to die there... and she does.

* Odin charges Lenneth with collecting the souls of warriors to join the battle of Ragnarok on the side of the Aesir.

* Near the early portion of the in-game introduction, Aluze and Badrak are speaking when a cinema plays. The knights from the caravan have given the Princess some Ghoul Powder in the guise of medicine from Ronbert. The princess is shown in excruciating detail as she transforms from a fairly attractive girl to a demonic ruddy beast that pummels a knight on the ground and eviscerates another one... while he's still in armor.

* Aluze and Badrak walk to the scene of the carnage and find a pair of soldiers facing off against the princess-turned-beast. A knight explains the situation and Badrak announces that the fight is not his and scoots off, leaving Aluze alone to take the creature on. As he rushes towards the creature, Lenneth and Freya appear - Lenneth stands on the ground and Freya floats directly above Aluze. After introductions are out of the way, Aluze comments that the beast should be unharmed since it was once a Princess. Lenneth won't relent and prepares to reap. A side-view battle screen appears where Lenneth leads the trio with Aluze in the background and Freya floating in the foreground, behind Lenneth. The beast draws first blood with a vicious claw attack on Lenneth but the trio press on and Aluze impacts massive damage with his mile high blade. After destroying the creature, it disappears in a column of light and Aluze is shown walking to the right in a forest setting. In the next scene, princess is shown dead on the ground and Lenneth walks over and collects her soul...

* After defeating Ronbert and flailing away his soldiers, Lenneth joins Aluze and she herself is joined by the spirit of the Princess. Freya takes Lenneth to a point above mountains and the adventure begins. Once control is granted to Lenneth, use the D-pad or analog nub to whirl around to view the expanse of the environment below. To hurtle forwards, press the X button and she'll throttle - direct her to the orange pinpoint on the map and once there, press "O" and Lenneth will dive earthwards until she reaches the wrecked remains of a building with a forearm statue jutting out of the detritus. Controls are as follows:

TRIANGLE / Option menu for items, equip, skill, specials, and party roster
O BUTTON / Forward sword slash attack
X BUTTON / Jump. Pressing down on d-pad + X makes Lenneth slide
SQUARE / Hurl crystal in a straight line trajectory
R1 TRIGGER / Location map that slowly fleshes out as you explore further

* Moving the d-pad or analog nub left or right sends Lenneth running while double-tapping the d-pad left or right makes Lenneth walk. To pick up bags on the floor, walk in front of them and press the O button. Lenneth crouches down and lifts the bag up.

* During battle, the four face buttons goad the characters into attacking. Press all four buttons simultaneously and watch the four warriors attack in concert like a gang. During battle, there are "purify weird soul" sequences where a face button cue appears on the screen and pushing it triggers the purification process by the corresponding character.

* The menu screen is in Japanese but whenever you highlight an option, it will appear momentarily in English as follows.

Skill.................Use Item............Divine Item............Party............Ability
Equipment......Transfer..............Status...................Config..........Data

* The game proper starts at the Mount Altoria Ruins where a whirling crystal save point may be used to store your position and to ensure that you won't have to go through the entire introduction sequence again. Once you've saved your data, rush to the right until you climb the stairs. Move to the left and enter the doorway. Inside, you'll find a bag which contains an iron key. To open the bag and take its contents, kneel before the bag and press the "O" button and it'll lay open and your treasure will be grabbed. Next, proceed to where you first entered the ruins and go to the leftmost door and you'll open the gate inside with the iron key.
