Description
Update: November 15, 2007
«©NCSX» Back in 1989, Hudson debuted the original Dungeon Explorer on the PC-Engine and gamers hungry for dank dungeon spelunking were sated. Nearly 20 years after the original game, Hudson releases an updated PSP version which features "Diablo" design sensibilities mixed with Gauntlet Legends action. A rudimentary story ties the action together but at its core, DEX is a hack 'n slasher where quests are granted by the Izark Town Guild.

At the outset of the game, character creation is straightforward with options for sex, job, and race which affect the attributes that a hero starts off with. Movement is handled through the analog nub while the d-pad selects items from an onscreen menu. The single-player mode allows a gamer to explore and crawl by his lonesome but the wireless cooperative mode gives up to four players the chance to team up and form a dungeon conquering gang. In the single-player mode, up to three NPCs can join the party and fight monsters on their own volition.

A wide range of 150 different weapons are available to use include swords, daggers axes, staffs, crossbows, and other armaments. The game engine generates dungeons randomly so that each experience is new and unique. Per usual dungeon exploration convention, monsters populate the levels and treasures in chests may be plundered for winnings.

NCS Game Notes
The intro to the game features a map of the land with key landmarks named Forest, Castle, Dungeon, etc. A voiceover recounts the background story and stark images accompany the prologue. The intro ends with a caped hero standing in silhouette as lightning flashes in the background.

» The options on the title screen are:

» Start a NEW GAME and the character creation menu pops up. You may enter the hero's name and select race, sex, and job. Keep an eye on the HP, AP, and attribute list on the bottom of the screen since they'll shift in value with every change. Finally, the color of the hero's clothes may be altered by way of three gauges for RED, GREEN, and BLUE. After creating the character, you'll be able to allocate three attribute points to STR, INT, RAP, DEX, MAG, LUC, and STA. Save the character to memory stick and you're on your way.

» The adventure starts off inside a dungeon where the hero is joined by two comrades. The first enemies that appear are a few snails which explode into green ocher and red haze when slain. A map on the upper left corner of the screen keeps track of the party's progress. Head to the west and then south to attack a large snail and smack open four wooden boxes filled with items. Continue to the south and then east to find a monster generator which oozes monsters from its gaping red portal. Destroy it by smacking continually while monsters emerge and it'll eventually explode. Head towards the north where a gate is raised from the ground which takes the party topside once again.

» After finding themselves on the surface, there's banter followed by another introductory sequence that's accompanied by scrolling text and a voice-over. Afterwards, the protagonist goes to Rodolyth's Izark Town which is fairly large with shops and townfolk who mill around waiting for interaction. If you walk to the left, you'll find Eliza's house which has burned down accidentally from a dropped lamp (shown earlier in the game). Near the center of town is an Adventurer's Guild which hands out missions and quests which pay a pre-determined bounty if the conditions are met. The left wall of the Guild is occasionally updated with news and postings that are of interest to adventurers.

» The hero's quarters are located in Izark Town where a bed awaits for saving progress to memory stick along with a chest for storing items. There's also a table with a gramophone on top which is where the volume may be adjusted.

» Movement is handled through the analog nub and the d-pad selects items from the menu on the right side of the screen.

» In the NOW LOADING screen, a candle burns on the left side of the screen.
