«©NCSX» Set in the Sengoku Jidai or Warring States period of Japan's history, Twelve Sengoku Fuushinden is a fictional account of an Owari Tokugawa warlord named Masanaga who uses arcane forces in a bid to conquer Japan under one gauntlet. Under his command, a number of highly competent generals lead his armies against the various daimyo in a fractious Japan. At the outset of the game, the player may choose to play as a male warrior named Hibiki or a swordswoman named Minori. In the first chapter, the protagonist meets up with a princess named Tian who has escaped from the clutches of Masanaga. She was meant to be a sacrifice but her plight rallies the protagonist to appropriate the unification ambitions of Masanaga with an army of his/her own. The game features a large amount of voice snippets when the characters interact with each other during the story development portions. Characters are shown side by side with conversation text underneath which is accompanied by speech. Background noises are also present to add extra aural atmosphere. For example, while in the town market, the faint chatter and murmur of a crowd behind the characters may be heard.

Encounters are depicted on isometric battlefields where two forces are arrayed against each other on opposing sides. Each unit is controlled directly where movement range is shown on highlighted grids. The camera may be rotated around a central axis for a full view of the surroundings near the active character. Once adjacent to a foe, an attack command may be selected which is then shown in a short animated sequence. Battles are fought on side by side confrontations where slashes, strokes, and kills are played out in streaming motion. Voice action occurs during battles where yelps, groans, shrieks, and little mutterings are uttered by both characters. The fighting system also allows for opportune button pressing to enhance attacks or perform multiple sequential blows against a hapless foe as well as defensive measures against oncoming blows.

Twelve uses a Gunshi companion system where skilled tacticians offer advice on combat strategy and also affect the morale and fighting efficacy of their troops and companions. A Gunshi is a master of military strategy and a capable martial arts practitioner for an all-around warrior. Generals in the Sengoku Jidai often deferred to a team of Gunshi for advice on advances and retreats during the tide of war. The word Gunshi breaks down into Gun (military) Shi (master). As the protagonist in the game interacts with a Gunshi or three, their association leads to stronger bonds which in turn improves their battlefield strength.

Also known as Twelve Sengoku Fengshenden.
