Update: April 21, 2006 «©NCSX» N3 is Sangoku Musou squared. A general rushes into battle against hordes of enemies that span the horizon as far as the eye can see. As the attack commences, blows devastate 10 to 20 enemy soldiers at a time and eventually send the survivors running for the hills. Each time 1000 kills is reached, a big number 1000, 2000, 3000, etc flashes on the screen to alert you to your thirsty bloodlust. In addition to conventional attacks, magic may be summoned to devastate groups of local area enemies and rain death upon roving masses of opposing infantry. Cinematic cut scenes split the action apart to relay a dramatic tale which explains why thousands of soldiers have to sacrifice themselves.... The game is eye candy through and through, from the title screen to the cinematic cut scenes to the blistering action on screen. The heroes and heroines in the game are impossibly beautiful and seemingly chiseled from polished hunks of marble. As is always the problem with games of this type, the action tends to become repetitive after the five thousandth kill. There's only so many ways to slice, dice, spin, and swing at enemy forces until one mumbles to oneself, "Didn't I just whack 800 busters just like these goons?" Despite the tedium of rote hack 'n slash, N3 does break up the action with cinemas as well as event scenes. The visuals are also brilliant enough to goad one to slash and slash some more to see what's next. NCS Game Notes » As enemies are slaughtered, their souls appear as red or blue tadpoles or sparks on the killing fields and waft around as if expecting a reincarnation before they're drawn into the hero. A niggle in the game play is the conundrum that plagues pretty much all other battlefield hack 'n slashers, namely the odd AI mechanism by which hundreds of soldiers just stand around and move slightly but don't press the attack or go on berserker rages. This is war and war should be brutal, savage, and all out blood spurting mayhem from all sides. Why are enemies as well as compatriots just standing around? For a recent game that didn't disappoint in this regard, check out Shinobido Takumi on the PS2 which provides challenging levels... which were designed by actual gamers. » A map is located on the upper-right corner of the screen which details the position of the hero, the enemies, and the overall level. A kill counter keeps track of enemy deaths on the lower-right corner of the screen which combos are counted directly above it. » Corpses lay on the battlefield and litter it like debris long after death.
